This 19th-century New York factory houses the apartment of Brandon and Amy Phillips as well as the workshop for their company, Miles & May Furniture Works.

Keeping the original mottled, worn-brick walls and outfitting the kitchen with their own custom cabinetry were among this couple’s cost-saving measures.

The bathroom evokes the building’s industrial bones. The pendant light is from Ikea, and the towel racks are repurposed train car luggage racks. The Carrara tiles are mismatched seconds. “It works if you let yourself not try to fix it,” says Brandon.

The dining area, with a table and hickory chairs from Miles & May, opens onto a kitchen the couple created as part of a DIY gut renovation. The result, says Amy, is an “intentional raw and polished combination.” The lamp is from M&M Electrical Surplus.

On an 18th-century farmstead in rural Sweden, two Copenhagen designers have handcrafted a summerhouse that seamlessly melds the modern and the traditional. The simple, pared-down aesthetic and the open-ended time frame of the project—along with the pair's building and design skills—helped Mads Odgård and Lyng Hansen achieve their renovation on a miniscule budget, with a project outline that ebbed and flowed with Odgård’s professional successes in product design.

The new addition to this home has panes that open to a front courtyard, and another set of windows that face the rear garden. The majority of the building was pre-fabricated and finished on site.

Here's the city's 16th-century Grote Markt, or Central Square, with its grand city hall and a fountain depicting the Roman soldier Brabo throwing a giant's severed hand into the river—part of a medieval legend that gave the city its name (the act of throwing the hand is referred to as 'handwerpen' in Flemish). Today you see the hand icon everywhere in Antwerp, from the town flag to boxes of hand-shaped chocolates.

Here's the view of the Marina from my room on the 12th floor. I didn't have an unobstructed view of the ocean, but clearly the Pacific is still pretty evident. I also liked the very comfy chairs from Emu.

The exhibition features more than 120 works of hand-wrought silver and popular mid-century products, like Muller-Munk's razor designs for Schick.

This fall, Knoll celebrates the 50th anniversary of its Warren Platner Collection with a new 18k gold-plate finish, seen here on the designer's armchair and stool.
