Brothers Robert and Gavin Paisley founded Chisel & Mouse to channel their passion for architecture by creating sculptures of iconic buildings. Each piece is made with plaster, which gives the sculpture weightiness and presence, as well as a cool, smooth finish. In its rendering of the Greyhound Bus Terminal in Washington, D.C., Chisel & Mouse captures the perfect symmetry of the building’s façade. The art deco building features vertical and horizontal straight lines, as well as rounded corners, which gives it a softer look. Explore more of Chisel & Mouse’s sculptures here.

Another gleaming gem of contemporary design is the city’s subway system. The station at Agios Dimitrios is the terminal for the Red Line.

Strömkajen Ferry Terminals (Marge Arkitekter: Stockholm, Sweden) The shape of these brass shelters near Stockholm’s seaside tourist mecca should be familiar to anybody taking snapshots: they're modeled after the cone of a film camera. Those taking photos are, in a sense, being framed themselves.

Bush Terminal Comfort Station

An abandoned airport terminal at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport was reborn as the TWA Hotel, a stylish stay that harkens on the romance of flying when it was still a novelty. Paying homage to the original architecture of the 1962 building designed by architect Eero Saarinen, JFK's only on-airport hotel is complete with midcentury modern guest rooms, a 10,000-square-foot rooftop deck with pool, and immersive experiences.

The exterior of Heathrow’s Terminal 5, a $6.5-billion addition to the ailing London airport, gives no sign of the huge open spaces and structural pyrotechnics within.
