A sign of the times: this baby thinks a magazine is a broken iPad.

Working in collaboration with the architecture firm OpenOffice, a sensitive master plan was devised for the museum building and its exterior setting. Today, Dia:Beacon has nearly 240,000 square feet of gallery space.

Joining an august panel that includes Michael Bierut of Pentagram, landscape architect Thomas Balsley, FASLA, Susan Chin, FAIA, of Design Trust for Public Space, will be landscape architect Claire Fellman, ASLA, of Snøhetta, the firm behind the design for the Times Square reconstruction, to be completed in 2015. The entire bathroom is based on a grid, informed by Brigham’s background in graphic design. The 4” redwood slats form the base measurement; the height of the sink, the bath, and all other features are built in multiples of four. Each piece was designed to either project from or recess back into the wall, continuing seamlessly into the next fixture. Everything from the medicine cabinet to the planters floats off the ground, opening the space.

Located just a short distance north of New York City, Beacon offers a welcome change of pace—greenery replaces concrete sidewalks and a Bohemian flare permeates the town. With a total population of just over 15,000, this hamlet has a tight-knit feel, and plenty of room for city-weary visitors to breathe in the Hudson River Valley air.

One of Rose's favorite signs belongs to the Indianhead Motel in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. "The colorful headdress on this one—repainted as recently as 2008—is even more stunning in person," he says. "Thanks to help from the local historical society, I was able to trace its origins back to 1958 when a man named Ernest Cote first opened the motel."

The artist's iteration of the club for the Whitney Biennial this spring echoes the courtyard's geometry, but defies its austerity with a bohemian interior. The words "break the ice" glow in neon. A table with refreshments is flanked by Marcel Breuer Cesca chairs.

Baby Max’s bedroom (in his parents' Los Angeles A. Quincy Jones house) is outfitted with a Gulliver crib and a red PS cabinet, both from Ikea, as well as a Birds in Harmony mobile by Christel Sadde and Katsumi Komagata for the Museum of Modern Art Store. The custom “I brake for unicorns” neon sign is from Let There Be Neon, a shop in New York City.

On his website Recapturist, Bill Rose documents signage across the United States. Along with the photographs, he details the history behind the subjects, like the Houston, Texas, coffee shop Dot. "In addition to being a Houston landmark since 1967, Dot Coffee Shop and has the distinction of being the first offering by wildly successful restaurateurs the Pappas Brothers," he writes.

The solid exterior reflects Cadena's concept of a skin, with a strong exterior layer that protects the more delicate, skeletal interior. The hanging bone at the entrance, a piece cast in aluminum, is meant to recall more simple, primitive signage from the past.

“Boyle Heights used to be a predominantly Jewish neighborhood,” Debora explains. “These street signs hold that heritage as well as the memories of people who live there today, including the gangs that plague the area.”

New Yorkers, architects, and international travellers alike will immediately recognize Bierut's most prominent work: the New York Times logo on the paper's eponymous building. The teardrop shape of the black forms don't block views and sunlight while the logo appears opaque from street level.
