Champagne White is derived from champagne chalk, which has a dry and velvety texture with large pigment particles, making it an ideal source for white pigment. Ninety million years ago, European chalk was embedded in an ancient sea through the slow accumulation of marine life, debris, and shells that are now calcified and have been raised by movement in the earth’s crust. In the Champagne region of France, chalk deposits in fertile soil help nurture the vines, storing warmth and water, giving champagne the distinctive tart and aromatic flavor sparkling wine drinkers expect. This same chalk is the source of white pigment that creates the cool, slightly beige Champagne White paint.

The color, texture, and grain of a piece of leather is taken into account for upholstering an interior. Each car GM produces needs to be consistent and uniform in look and customization options. For example, if a buyer sees a caramel leather in a showroom car and wants it in their own, it needs to look the same. The studio makes sure that tanneries will be able to provide the right shade for a piece of leather and will be able to reproduce that on a large scale.

The color kitchen, where inks are made, is located in an open area as the inks are non-toxic and odorless.

In the bathroom, a custom ceramic backsplash designed by Meredith and Sample joins an iroko-wood tub created by their students a the University of Toronto. In spaces where the tiles don't need to be cut around corners, outlets, or other obstacles, it might even be possible to do the tile work yourself for a DIY project.

If the idea of a plain white backsplash doesn't appeal to you, but you still want a neutral backsplash, consider handmade tiles or a material that comes in a range of colors and tones. One of the biggest challenges was prototyping, sampling, and testing to determine the correct formulas and process for the materials. “Concrete, for example, when poured in different environmental conditions produces different results,” says architect Tony Vella. “This doesn’t always work for a homogenous architecture.” As a result, the concrete was one of the most expensive elements of the home. “It was extremely detailed and very laborsome, but definitely worth the investment,” reveals Vella.

Once a derelict urban alley, Mint Plaza is nestled between the Old Mint and several historic warehouses. A simple ground plane unifies the plaza, while a steel arbor balances the towering warehouses to the north and the lower neoclassical facade of the Mint building to the south.
