One of the hardest things to do when looking at potential homes is to overlook existing finishes, colors, and materials.

The Rabari collection by the London design studio Doshi Levien consists of three carpets handmade in India using the hand-knotted and hand-woven Sumak techniques. "At the very beginning of the project, we decided to create a series of rugs that evoke the sensual and shiny world of tribal folk embroidery in India," Doshi Levien says. "We wanted our collection for Nanimarquina to reference the unfinished embroideries, like studies of different techniques in progress, as they gradually emerge over time." A second bedroom was converted into a home office/dining room. A Dieter Rams 606 Universal Shelving System (below and opposite) lines the wall. The “Ziggy Diamond” wallpaper (behind the surreal Erle Loran painting) comes from Flavor Paper, a New Orleans firm that prints wall coverings to order, and the ingenious folding table is by Swedish designer Bruno Matthson.

In the kitchen, a Dornbracht faucet joins a Silestone countertop. Paint in All White by Farrow & Ball—a shade used throughout the house—provides a crisp backdrop for a print from Thomas Demand’s series The Dailies, while a vintage Boris Lacroix lamp hangs ready to illuminate the scene.

Clayden claims that Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey was the inspiration for his bathroom.

Before renovation, the space served as a hair salon.

A steel I-beam was exposed during the renovation, and McManus and Drew opted to leave it that way, as it complemented the radiators and pipes that remain in their raw state elsewhere in the apartment. The general contractor, Eze Bongo, constructed the bamboo plywood desk.

Kelsey: Impossible Geometry Rather, Géométrie de L’impossible, a project by artist Fanette Guilloud in which she paints optical illusions in abandoned spaces. To catch the image, one must stand at just the precise in order to get the perspective.

Polish designer Maria Jeglinska (spoiler alert: one of Dwell's Young Guns for 2015, which will be announced in our April issue!) will be auctioning off two vases at Stockholm's artist-operated Örnsbergsauktionen auction house.

Solar water heating converts solar radiation to conductive heat to raise water temperature. A pump circulates transfer fluid from the tank to the roof, where solar collectors absorb the sun’s thermal energy and heat the transfer liquid. The transfer liquid enters a heat exchanger, warming the water in the storage tank, and the hot water flows to a traditional or tankless water heater that provides backup heating when the sun isn’t shining.

Stainless steel has been extremely common in kitchen design, but new finishes in the metal family are being introduced across the board. Durable and scratch-resistant graphite is a new finish in Monogram's lineup.
