Margaux and Walter Kent named the Marlowe Lunch Bag after their friend Katie Marlowe, who was known for giving her husband and children lunch bags that contained handwritten notes or quotations. Made of sustainable and durable wax canvas, the Marlowe bag contains an exterior pouch, designed for putting a handwritten message, following Katie’s tradition. The bag can be wiped clean and maintains the classic look of a paper lunch sack, without ever needing to be thrown away.

Peg and Awl’s products have a timeless quality that is reflected in their materials, design, and the stories behind each product. In their Philadelphia studio, Margaux and Walter Kent create products with new history that inspire conversation and joy.

Gant says that the design for their clever Canvas Picnic Bag began shortly after a six-month stay in Stockholm. “Although I loved the experience there, the winter left me especially appreciative of spending as much time in the sun and parks of San Francisco as I could.” The design is a blanket that folds into a bag, making it easy to transport. It “was inspired by the desire to take a break in the park on a whim, so your bag could always provide that dry spot and carry snacks from the market.” As for Gant and Deming, she says “it’s a common ‘problem’ for us to find ourselves with a sudden urge to take lunch in a park or on a weekend hike, so we’ve found ourselves using the bags often.”

Antonio Torres and Michael Loverich refer to Bittertang, which they founded in 2007, as a "design farm." In 2013, they designed this pop-up store on the West Side of Manhattan for the fashion designer Michael Bastian by fusing together two shipping containers and embedding the structure in a mound of hay. Inside, the walls were coated with melted wax. Photo by Evan Joseph.

In the Yabu and Pushelberg-designed bedrooms, rolls of wax-dipped canvas replace traditional headboards, and a muted color palette creates a cozy, nostalgic retreat. “There's a sort of Father Knows Best honesty to the rooms, a sweetness that makes you think of childhood, and of comfort,” says Glenn Pushelberg. Smart, space-saving solutions include under-bed storage and a peg wall on which hangs a writing desk and a fold-up chair.
