WAVE CANDLESTICK The Wave Candlestick combines traditional craft production with a contemporary design sensibility. Hand-turned by artisans in Jaipur, India and designed by Michael Dreeben for AKMD, the Wave Candlestick mimics the undulating curves of sine waves. Each candlestick is made from repurposed, sustainably—harvested Mango wood -a native tree to India— and is burned and oil finished.

BLOSSOM CANDLESTICKS Part of the Blossom series, the Lily Candlestick is the baby in this family of blooms, standing at 24.5 cm. This joyous and organic form is crafted from hand turned beech wood— a production process inspired by the mid-century candlesticks which were made from the scraps of wooden furniture. Created by Danish designer Anders Nørgaard, the Lily Candlestick looks lovely as a single bud, but best when paired with others of the Blossom series to form a meadow in full bloom. Made in Sweden.

NICK AND THE CANDLESTICK Drawing its inspiration from antique weights and a Sylvia Plath poem of the same name, the Nick And The Candlestick candle holder is romantic and evocative. Designed by Lindsey Adelman, nine ethereal brass cylinders stand on a walnut tray, each one a different height. Candles appear almost as if they are growing out of them, and when lit the flames appear to dance in the high gloss brass finish. These look gorgeous sitting together on their tray or scattered throughout a room.

Designed by Ariane van Dievot, the Avandi Candlestix Candle Holder Set is a series of three sleek candlestick holders. In the kitchen, black cabinetry and countertops from Swan Company offer a crisp counterpoint to the house’s white walls. Appliances from Swan Company and a Santini faucet ensure that the space is also functional.

Designed by Alvar Aalto in 1936, the Aalto Vase is inspired by the beauty of the natural world, including the untamed shorelines of Finland’s thousands of lakes. A classic Iittala design, this vase is available in several sizes and colors, and looks just as elegant without flowers as it does when filled. The Field Candlesticks from Good Thing are cheerful tabletop accessories that blend the function of traditional candlestick holders with innovative modern details. Designed by Sam Anderson, the candlesticks are available in a range of colors, and sold as a set of two. Each component is comprised of painted hard maple and steel. The painted wood brings warmth to the accessory, while steel gives an industrial slant.

The home’s forms, which are masked by the cantilevered entrance, become apparent once one enters the central courtyard. Living spaces abut three of its sides, looking in with full-height windows. The roofline can be seen fluctuating as one goes from front-to-back. The memorial tree, around which the courtyard and home are built, will continue to grow in coming years.

Concrete pillars are key in the event of a tidal wave.

The façade designed by Apollo Architects and Associates features an overhanging upper level, which ensures that the entrance is pleasantly shaded and demarcates the property’s two parking spaces. The home’s wooden structure is clad in a bright white exposed concrete.

The living room is situated across the courtyard from the kitchen and dining room. Actus’ Graham sofa and beige carpet provide soft textural touches. The wall console was designed by Apollo Architects and Associates and created for the site by Zousakukagu.

The table, chairs, and bench in the dining area all come from Actus. Their walnut finish harmonizes with the ceiling’s Oregon pine louvers. The ceiling’s pitch and the direction of its louvers guide the eye down towards the central courtyard.

Ten Thousand Waves, the nine-screen installation by Isaac Julien, pictured here while on display at the Museum of Modern Art, will be part of MOCAA’s permanent collection and be featured in MOCAA’s atrium. Other highlights include pieces from Africans from all over the continent and the diaspora, including work by Kudzanai Chiurai, Nandipha Mntambo, Edson Chagas, and Zanele Muholi. Mark Coetzee, the collection’s curator, is originally from South Africa and says building a contemporary art museum in Africa is a dream come true. “I’ve always wanted to do this since I was a kid,” Coetzee says. “Normally collectors collect what they collect, and at a certain point, they say ‘Let’s start a museum,’” he says.
