The cherry veneer cabinets carry into the streamlined kitchen where a Shepard Fairey print and a range by Wolf take pride of place. "We tried to make sure that all the wood used in the project looked seamless and uniform," says de Leon. "Wood was the only 'color' we introduced."

Natural wood trim—as opposed to laminate—is gaining steam in luxury car interiors. Various veneers are stores in a carefully monitored humidor before they're applied to models for armrests or dashboard and door details.

The base is steel with an ash veneer.

Cubicco’s prefab houses, like the Cabana Beach model, are built with laminated veneer lumber, an engineered material that uses up to 90 percent of a tree—compared to typical wood timbers that use only 60 to 70 percent. Modules can be disassembled if the owners relocate.

Brisbane-based studio Owen and Vokes and Peters designed a modern kitchen addition for a traditional Queensland-style timber house. Glossy Vogue Ghiaccio kitchen tiles set off custom cabinetry built by Cooroy Joinery & Woodworks using American oak veneer and Centor doors. The dishwasher is by AEG.

Witt and his team used the framework of the original home as guidance for the new property, but they decided to change the orientation of the master bedroom’s windows to show views of Mount Rainer. “Seeing Mt. Rainer set behind the lake like that is extraordinary,” he says. Once again, sapele was used for the detailing.

The home’s front door, by Simpson Door Company, fills an eight-foot frame with sapele veneer on solid wood. “Sapele [is] an African mahogany often used in marine construction,” Witt says. An Emtek Hera handle is fastened to the door.

“The clients desired a maintenance-free, year-round home using the ultimate in ‘green’ building methodologies,” Mulvena says. The staircase is an example of the construction’s mindset: it is made from the leftover laminated veneer lumber used on the roof.

Malboeuf stands at a Fisher & Paykel refrigerator in the kitchen. He and Bowie shopped around to find appliances that balance cost and performance: the dishwasher is Bosch, the gas cooktop is Dacor, and the oven is Fagor. Walnut veneer clads the cabinets, and the floors are bamboo.

Designed collaboratively, the modular, oak veneer SHIFT Shelf won New Tendency the 2014 Interior Innovation Award. Freestanding or in front of a wall, the unit offers storage to suit any context.

Custom millwork by architect Mike Jacobs allow the studio to serve as a secondary storage space for the main house. The clear finished walnut veneer prvoides a polished contrast to the raw floors.

Sapele is also prominently displayed in the great room. “It provided all the warmth we needed in the space, while the tile floors gave us the durability and resistance to wet feet that they wanted for the main level floor,” Witt explains. A custom end table with a granite top and Dalton Recliners by Room & Board sit around a fireplace from Monessen.

Kite table by Steuart Padwick for Resource Furniture The 51-inch-long table sports a durable laminate surface—ideal for working and food prep. When unfolded to 102 inches, it reveals a refined walnut-veneer top.

Despite their fidelity to the original structure, the residents made small changes, notably in the kitchen: The wood-veneered island was moved to create more circulation space behind it and finished in white lacquer and stainless steel. Wood cabinetry above the island was exchanged for a steel ventilation unit.

Craig and Thomas infused the surfaces of the space with their bold taste by alternating the orientation of the wood grain in the millwork veneer panels to create a lively pattern.

Fir-veneer plywood wraps the entire interior of a compact guest cabin with a 12-by-15-foot footprint, smaller than a single-car garage.

Blackbutt veneer cabinetry inject warmth into the kitchen and match the blackbutt ceiling planks seen throughout. Granite and concrete countertops create visual breaks in the timber surfaces.

Oiled birch veneer lines the entire interior. Instead of the staircase, a ladder leads up to the loft where a skylight brings more light into the home. Situated on either side of the bathroom entry, closets make up for the storage lost by removing the stair.
