Hebra Arquitectos used charred timber and local stone to craft an elemental home that blends into its rugged setting.

The project’s name, Loom House, is a nod to “weaving people and place,” says Karen. The couple hope their project contributes to spreading more awareness of the kind of systemic changes the LBC strives for. “With the Living Building Challenge, we liked that you not only create a healthy home,” says Todd, “but you consider how that healthy home is creating a healthy environment and community.”

Virginia. Furniture-maker Todd Leback avoids stains and paints, preferring instead to let high-quality materials speak for themselves. Here, however, the grain of a custom cabinet is complemented by restrained use of black and red.

Materials throughout the house are elemental, befitting its wilderness setting. The walls are made of cross-laminated timber and the floors are slabs of heated concrete.

A ceiling rosette and a chandelier by Neri & Hu add some much-needed pizzazz to the formal living room. The lush velvet sofa is by JHID in collaboration with Master Furniture Makers and Trio Upholstery; the coffee table is another collaboration with Master Furniture Makers. The fireplace features surround tiles by Pratt and Larson.

At the table, a Todd Oldham for La-Z-Boy modular sofa serves triple duty as seating for work, dinner, and overnight guests.

On the side of the home that faces the canal, the main kitchen’s aesthetic is decidedly elemental. Custom Eginstill hot-rolled steel cabinetry with recessed Gaggenau appliances surround a Carrara marble island.

Working with project architect Todd Aranaz, Fougeron moved the living room to the ground floor and combined it with the dining area and kitchen. The Stoccolma sofa and ottoman are by Paola Navone for Baxter.

According to Farnham: “We selected outdoor furnishings that had elemental geometry and a sculptural quality. We worked with some of my favorite furniture fabricators to customize pieces for this special site: Croft House, James Perse, DWR, and Sutherland.”

The small, angular guesthouse that architect Todd Saunders designed for Steinar Jørgensen is defined by a patio that appears to sit in a cutaway in the spruce-clad volume. The red PS VÅGÖ chair is from Ikea.

Todd Residence, strategically located in the hustle and bustle of Gurugram, stands as a serene enclave amidst the energetic city life.

For the landscape and redesigned pool area, Terremoto kept “their movies simple and elemental,” matching the subtractive approach taken in the house. The firm collaborated with Farnham on the design of the long-span pergola, which is cleverly engineered to only need four support posts.

"The view," recalls Todd, "was a driving factor in purchasing this lot." Designed with outdoor living in mind, the roof deck includes ample space for al fresco dining, lounging, and soaking in the Southern California sunshine.

To create Casa del Tec, the grand prize for Solteos Tec Tradicional, a lottery in Mexico that funds scholarships for higher eduction, Chilean firm Elemental referenced castle design. “They are fortresses turned inward, protecting something inside that we cannot see. They are simultaneously strong and monumental, and have an abstract presence in the world. Castles are introverted, but not shy.”

Architect Will Winkelman and landscape architect Todd Richardson collaborated with client JT Bullitt to design a house that blends into its surroundings in Steuben, Maine. The green roof gives the impression that "the ground just jumped onto the roof," Richardson says.

Todd's Residence draws inspiration from a multifaceted approach, blending contemporary design principles with a profound connection to its natural surroundings.

Just as the stairs use movement to change how residents experience the space, the walls also provide a new and subtle awareness: concrete ridges—seen right—cast changing shadows that mark the passage of the sun. Features like these, in the words of Carmona, “manipulate your experience, bring [a] different consciousness,” and elevate your awareness of the space.
