Created as a collaboration between Meg Callahan and Hawkins New York, this handmade quilt is inspired by sailor’s knots and the skies of the American west. The hand stitching recalls traditional American quilting techniques, while the screen-printed graphic gives a decidedly modern feel to the quilt. The 100 percent cotton quilt is both graphic and subtle, making it a bedding choice that suits a variety of interior spaces.

From Haptic Lab, the Constellation Quilt combines enduring craft technique with the mysteries of the universe to create a modern heirloom that also serves as a functional art object. Funded by the Kickstarter community, each quilt is handmade from natural cotton and cotton sateen and depicts an October night’s sky in the Northern Hemisphere. Tactile French knots illuminate the Milky Way that sweeps the majestic quilt’s celestial terrain.

Says Fehrenbacher, “Haptic Lab's incredibly detailed Soft Map City Quilts really need to be seen and touched in person to realize just how awesome they are. Leather Bifold Wallet, $32 at the Dwell Store Los Angeles–based Otaat’s leather wallet is made from supple cowhide. With a slim profile, the wallet is specifically designed to fit into a back pocket.

Hueso (which means bone in Spanish) features murals made from 10,000 bones, a reference to the chef’s natural cooking style. It’s part of a “Darwinian vision,” says designer Ignacio Cadena, and required six months of scouring north Mexico, cleaning, and purifying to get the off-white skeletal pieces ready.

Whereas others might look at a board-formed cement wall in a basement and see, well, a concrete wall, Jess and Jonathan Taylor, the design duo behind the L.A.-based firm Taylor + Taylor, were inspired. The couple had purchased a virtually untouched 1952 house in east L.A. and that concrete wall became the backdrop for a new guest kitchen in the basement. "It was really the starting point of the whole design," says Jess Taylor. "As designers, our goal is to always try to incorporate the existing surroundings whenever possible, utilize them in practical ways, and be inspired by them."

From Haptic Lab, the Constellation Quilt combines enduring craft technique with the mysteries of the universe to create a modern heirloom that also serves as a functional art object. It can be draped on a chair or couch, or folded on the edge of a bed.

The Fairmont Wall Mirrors represent the perfect blend of rusticity and elegance. Each mirror in the series—round, long oval, and wide oval—features a hand-stitched leather frame that is fixed with brass rivets. The leather frame functions like a pocket for the mirror glass, and the natural material will darken over time, giving each mirror a distinct patina.

The solid exterior reflects Cadena's concept of a skin, with a strong exterior layer that protects the more delicate, skeletal interior. The hanging bone at the entrance, a piece cast in aluminum, is meant to recall more simple, primitive signage from the past.

Although from afar this ivory quilt looks simple, up close, the quilt has detailed neighborhoods like New York City’s Battery Park and Los Angeles’s Studio City. Available at the Dwell Store, $450
