Their design took four months to construct. And much like their later project on the same property, the Nest, the EDGE cabin features a protective, movable screen: when not in use, these white oak panels slide inwards to sheild the cabin windows and doors.

The Venue: Skylight Clarkson Sq. Located in West SoHo, Skylight Clarkson Sq is the crown jewel of raw venues in Manhattan. The sprawling, 60,000 sq ft ground level space is one of the city’s largest event floor plates. Skylight Clarkson Sq, which once served as the High Line’s most southern terminal, is a versatile white studio which producers are limited only by their imaginations.

Bath Towels: One can never have too many extra towels and this Yoshii Square Towel, designed by Maho Ukai, is thoughtfully produced from 100 percent hand-picked, raw cotton that is naturally separated from the seed to prevent the tearing of the fibers and comes in an elegant pattern that combines a bold block of color with a graphic white and grey striped side.

Boxy Rebellion “I like simple shapes, and for a house,” says Winterhalder, “a box is very good.” The two downstairs bathrooms are located in freestanding larch-covered cubes; the kitchen island is resoundingly rectilinear; and a square-shaped area in the guest bedroom serves as a home office, where Winterhalder designs UV-blocking children’s beach wear for her label, Beach Heroes. Measure Twice When determining the height of the concrete blocks that form the outer wall of the kitchen island, the couple took a hands-on approach. “We measured our coffeemaker and a bottle of oil, and that’s how much higher we made the concrete blocks than the counter,”Winterhalder says. The blocks themselves were made to measure by a concrete supplier.

The house is about 3,000 square feet with six bedrooms, four of them on the second floor, surrounding a stairway to the large open space below where cooking, dining, game-playing, and movie-watching take place.

Completed in 2009, the E.D.G.E comprises two modules that contain the mechanical areas (including the kitchen and bathroom) joined together with walls of glass and white oak panels.

An outdoor room works perfectly for family meals.

A floor-to-ceiling wall unit accommodates a fridge, stove, oven, and convertible custom cabinetry. The pendant light is from the Multi Luminaire showroom in Pointe Claire, Quebec; the appliances are from Bosch and Miele.

It quickly becomes a coffee table when its legs are folded inwards and hidden underneath the tabletop.

And of course, when specially arranged and with the help of a headboard, the table(s) become a third sleeping area. Starting in July 2013, the Yudchitzes built an even smaller—and more simply crafted—cabin just 130 feet from this project. They built the new dwelling using materials leftover from other projects, thereby reducing its cost dramatically.

Industrial designer Russel Wright believed that the table was the center of the home. His Residential Collection, including this full place setting, is made from durable, shatterproof melamine. This setting includes a small bowl and side plate, salad plate, and dinner plate.

"Unlike traditional broadloom and area rugs, we’re a modular system that allows you to create custom rugs, runners, and wall-to-wall designs to fit any size and shape," senior designer Cristina Englund says. "With broadloom rugs, you have to replace whole sections of a rug at a time, but with FLOR you can pick up one square and clean it in the sink."

Studio Bazelet began the renovation by knocking down a wall between the living room and the kitchen. By joining the spaces together, they were able to bring more light into the space.

Joining an august panel that includes Michael Bierut of Pentagram, landscape architect Thomas Balsley, FASLA, Susan Chin, FAIA, of Design Trust for Public Space, will be landscape architect Claire Fellman, ASLA, of Snøhetta, the firm behind the design for the Times Square reconstruction, to be completed in 2015. FLOR tiles are made using recycled materials. "We’re part of a program called Net Effects, which buys discarded fishing nets from local fishermen in the Philippines," Englund says. "We create yarn from them. 85% of our products are made with this 100% recyclable nylon."

All of the apartment’s fixtures are by Kohler, including the kitchen sink and faucet as well as the Tea-for-Two bathtub, Vox square sink, and Catalan mirror in the bathroom. The Thassos marble subway tile is by Ann Sacks.

In an 850-square-foot loft in Montreal, Quebec–based firm Gepetto built understated, custom cabinetry to suit an aging couple's needs. Here, the Murphy bed that folds into a larger walnut storage unit. The wall, which also conceals a washer and dryer, does double duty as a partition between the bedroom and the loft’s entrance. Modern Murphy beds like this one often incorporate sleek lines constructed in dark-toned woods.

Inspired by Swiss Pritzker Prize-winning architect Peter Zumthor, the Yudchitzes designed and crafted an exquisitely precise interior. As they report in this Dwell article, “It cost at least $100,000 to build because the materials were crafted to within .002 inches, so it’s expensive for what it is."

The manufacturing of FLOR tiles is designed to be as energy efficient as possible. The process relies on renewable energy sources and technologies that help reduce emissions and waste. With its Return & Recycle program, old carpet squares can be returned to FLOR, where the face fiber and backing is separated, and the materials are used to make new rugs. FLOR products are certified by the Carpet and Rug Institute's Green Label Plus program, meaning that they have very low emissions of VOCs.

The 1,300-square-foot 1940s bungalow had little character before the renovation.

As part of the London Design festival's annual Landmark Project, Airbnb commissioned four designers to create custom homes for Trafalgar Square.
