Upon entering the exhibition, visitors are greeted by Dutch design studio Unfold’s Kiosk Project that imagines a future where digital printing booths stand next to fast food stalls on city street corners. The idea being that customers will be able to use the Kiosk for a number of instances including getting a bespoke fix for a broken heel or printing out a last minute gift for a friend.

Mikei calls this space the "reading nook," which is complete with six stainless steel shelves from Kiosk48th filled with colorful accessories from Bi-Rite, HAY, MoMA, and DWR. The vintage chairs sit over a rug from Mush Studios.

Coffee Kiosk:

The bed in Sara’s room has been in the family since the early 1900s.

Grant built the steel-and-cypress gate. On the other side, he set up his coffee kiosk and art gallery.

The shape of the kitchen island "reflects the local iconic beachside concrete kiosk building saved by the community," said the architects.

This Beverly Hills kitHAUS is comprised of modernist prefab modules that can accommodate a variety of uses: from yoga studios to home offices, and from weekend retreats to pop-up kiosks and guest rooms.

To save on cost, check-in kiosks made out of butcher blocks—a nod to the nearby Meatpacking District—replace the traditional lobby, while a wood-formed concrete staircase draws guests up to the shared spaces above.

The windows feature high-gloss interior paint trim. “In Holland, they use high-gloss white; we used black,” says Sara.

Designers Sara and Rich Combs of The Joshua Tree House brought The Assembly to life with a soothing neutral color scheme and quirky vintage furnishings and decor.

Honor Coffee's branding was designed by Studio Dessuant Bone.

“I think of furniture design as micro-architecture with a really strong link to human proportions,” says Marie Dessuant.

They also designed this Home Coffee kiosk.

Sara works in the kitchen, which contains a propane cooktop from Wolf and a propane refrigerator by Dometic. The louvered windows are from the Glass Guru and the porcelain tile is from Daltile.

A door frame was preserved as "a sculptural memory piece," Sara Imhoff says, after a wall separating the old kitchen from a small dining room was demolished. The countertops and backsplash are by Caesarstone.

At James and Sara Davis’s weekend home on O‘ahu, double-height doors open to a lanai-like space at the center of the house. The home’s energy needs are met via solar panels set by the entry.

The three levels of the house transition from public to private: The ground floor is composed of the kitchen and living-dining area; the bathroom and closet occupy the mezzanine, accessed by a ship’s ladder; and the sleeping loft hovers a couple steps above. The seminal 1970s tome A Pattern Language, written by Christopher Alexander, Sara Ishikawa, and Murray Silverstein, inspired the layout. “I’m a huge proponent of the [book],” says Azevedo. “I like the ideas of a bed as an alcove, natural light on two sides of a room, varying ceiling heights, and different levels of privacy.”

SARAS WALL SHELVES Swedish designer Jacob Granat fabricated this compact storage system with an eye on mid-century modern lines and a present-day solution: a place where his girlfriend can keep her phone, keys, and wallet right by the front door. Price: $550

The active family had just returned from a three-year stint in Amsterdam and wanted a low-maintenance weekend retreat that would "give us energy and not take it away," explains Sara, who is the president of vintage-inspired home decor company Schoolhouse.

Charrier transformed a cramped attic into a sunny dining room with Vitral windows and white-tinted pine floors by Dinesen. The Sara table is by Hay, the Shell chairs are by Charles and Ray Eames, and the artwork is a hand-printed textile she had framed.

Third Wave Kiosk / Tony Hobba Architects

According to the Cranbrook Center for Collections and Research, "school teachers Sara Stein Smith and Melvyn Maxwell Smith, undeterred by their modest salaries and guided by a shared love of architecture, met Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin in 1941 and commissioned a custom home." The Smith House in Bloomfield Hills offers tours of the Usonian home and narrates the couple’s story.

The wall that separates the kitchen from the driving area consists of a double plywood layer built by Jonathan’s dad, a carpenter. It has a window fitted with curtains, made by Jonathan’s mom, while Sara’s mom provided the curtain rings.

Oliver and Sara Fritsch’s Mount Hood getaway—not far from Mount Hood Meadows, one of the largest ski resorts in Oregon—is tall and skinny, reminiscent of the canal houses in Amsterdam, where the Fritsch family lived for three years. Also notable is the facade, painted in a custom shade of soft black. Inside, the house is arranged in a reverse layout, with the open living space located at the top.
