Low Tide Shelving System. "The tidal range is the vertical difference between the high tide and the succeeding low tide. Tides are the rise and fall of sea levels caused by the gravitational forces exerted by the Moon and the Sun and the rotation of the Earth. The shelves in these two floating pieces of furniture mark the tidal ranges of the Strait of Magellan, the calmer Pacific versus the more dramatic Atlantic."

The home is built in two parts: on the left is where the primary residents live. On the right, a second smaller building stores boats and other recreational gear on the ground floor and features a guest suite on the second floor. "The house’s proximity to the water encourages recreational swimming, boating and exploring," says Haggis.

Like the everyday rhythm of the tides, the home's architecture ultimately reflects the idea of movement.

The second floor landing—which features Modway Waverunner chair and ottoman—makes full use of the double-height glazed facade. As Haggis puts it, the home's "architecture and siting offer a variety of breathtaking broad and framed views of the river, embankment and dynamic landscape."

Upstairs, a Richard Prince painting hangs in one of the two guest rooms.

The firm envisioned the pool as a spot where water floods the stone, "almost in a way of a pond remaining after the turning tides."

The cabins had to be built a certain height above the water to protect against high tide and predicted sea level rise. The structures are elevated on iron rods drilled into the rock and anchored with steel reclaimed from the island.

Once in the pool, however, it feels more like the ocean. As with a shelf, the bottom drops quickly from three feet to the nine-foot deep end. A set of three long, shallow steps sits above the middle depth like a sandbar at high tide, the top tread covered with just a few inches of water.
