An attentive sensitivity to site played into nearly every aspect of both the exterior andinterior spaces of the home. Architect Peter Rose collaborated with landscape architect Michael Van Valkenburgh, who worked to craft and maintain the wild, organic feel of the environs. Will Parry, a local builder, custom-fabricated all of the sustainably harvested Spanish cedar-and-glass windows and skylights throughout. Here, a vertical-swinging window at the end of the entry hallway opens directly to a lush expanse of vegetation.

"The cedar siding is simply stained with a black semi-transparent oil stain [from Cabot], which allows the color of the wood to still emerge through,” architect Robert Hutchison says. “We love how the black color makes the building recede into the background, and how it in turn allows the trees on the site to emerge as the highlight.”

The Plicate Analog Watch from Nava Design is an inspired wristwatch, modeled after the pleats found in folder paper fans. A monochrome design, the watch strap is modeled after the watch case not only in color, but also in the pleated design. This thoughtful detail in the watch strap allows air to flow between the band and the arm of the wearer, which keeps the watch comfortable and prevents dirt from building up.

In the hall, the designer allowed the original details to resonate. “The old building has a lot to tell us,” she says.

"We wanted to keep the exterior walls uncluttered, so you can focus on the views, the light, and the air," says Rosa Garneau, the owner of a 650-square-foot co-op in New York's Chelsea neighborhood.
