The kitchen cabinets are custom-made from 100-year-old wood purchased at Sliverado Salvage. There’s a breakfast nook and a nine-foot island finished in Tadelakt, a waterproof plaster often used in Moroccan architecture, creating a communal and open space that flows into the living room. "Tadelakt is such a beautiful material and provides an old-world, earthy feeling, but using it is very labor-intensive," says Elaine.

The floorboards are lumberyard “culls” that had turned gray or cracked from being exposed to weather. Meffan had them re-milled into pristine planks with an old-world feel. Contractors typically pass up culls to get to the “good” wood below. Ask at your local home center, and you may be able to get them at a steep discount, or even for free.

This adorns a pair of ceramic pickle jars, these were sourced—which was once used to store dried fish/pickles—from antique dealers during the house’s construction. This gives the whole space an old-world charm and the art just smoothens the entire space due to the rich fabric texture. The custom chair was restored from an old furniture market in south Kerala.
