Modernism Week will recognize internationally acclaimed modernist architect Richard Neutra with a special dedication ceremony on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars on Friday, February 13. The free event presents a unique opportunity to celebrate one of the most notable architects in the history of Palm Springs, and to recognize his contribution to midcentury modern architecture—most notably in the form of the Kaufmann house in Palm Springs.

Bloemker calls the original kitchen, which included such Space Age wonders as built-in can openers, an “afterthought,” disconnected from the rest of the home. Architect Michelle Kaufmann set about removing walls to open up the space. The countertops are Caesarstone; the maple cabinetry is by Randall Wilson & Sons Fine Carpentry.

This modernist prefab home can be customized to reflect the needs of the client and features a number of green design elements.

Architect Michelle Linden worked with Brothers to create a minimalist house. Inspired by the inward-looking approach of Cistercian abbeys, Linden oriented the U-shaped structure around a courtyard.

OMD continually updates the ShowHouse with the latest eco-friendly materials, including nontoxic birch veneer Koskipanels and Durapalm flooring, which is a secondary product of coconut palms.

“Some people struggle with the color of the bricks. It does stand out, but in a good way. If you’re going to do something different, there’s no point compromising,” says Michelle.

Custom built-in storage was a splurge Michelle and Haden were willing to spend on. In the laundry room, Fireclay tiles were another high-spend choice. "It was out of our budget," Michelle says, "but it was so dramatic, and we saved so much by using inexpensive white tile in the bathroom.
