Erika: LA Liber Anicorum

L.A. street art has had a couple of boosts of late: This week the city council voted to lift a decade-old ban on outdoor murals, and last month the Getty Research Institute created LA Liber Amicorum, a book that binds together 143 works on paper from more than 150 of Los Angeles's leading street artists. From the Getty: “The title and the spirit of the book were inspired by a 400-year-old manuscript in the Getty Research Institute's collections, a liber amicorum ("book of friends"), which was originally bound with blank leaves that multiple contributors then filled with illuminated coats of arms, watercolors, poetry, and calligraphy as mementos for the owner.”

LA-MÁS, Backyard Basics: An Alternative Story of the Granny Flat

LA-Más will propose a collective approach to housing in Elysian Valley. Our vision is to write an alternative history for the future of the neighborhood that will serve as a resident-led and resident-owned model for low-rise high-density housing. The project will critically engage lot-lines and speculative buildable space at the air-rights level to envision new territories for low-density development. By utilizing the neighborhood’s existing buildable space, we will propose an architectural strategy that realizes the needs of Elysian Valley through cooperative development, combined entitlements, consolidated services, re-consideration of permitted granny flats, and other various opportunities that are possible only through a collective community approach.

Norms debuted in 1949 at the famed corner of Sunset and Vine in Hollywood. The 24-hour coffee shop chain, founded by Los Angeles-native Norm Roybark, opened its La Cienega flagship location in 1957. Architects Louis Armet and Eldon Davis, who were known for their post-war Googie architecture, designed the building with a large, neon, saw tooth pennant sign to attract the attention of passersby and to echo the futuristic diamond-shaped roofline and geometric elements throughout the diner.

LA-Más is a nonprofit that performs design-based experiments with the city as their lab. As a means of facilitation through storytelling, LA-Más held a block party in Elysian Valley in which they partnered with the Elysian Valley Neighborhood Watch to have a temporary street closure across the street from the Yardin del Rio. As an added layer, they also constructed bulletin boards that attached to city signage (stop, school, yield signs, etc.) and a crosswalk done with construction marking paint to leave infrastructure after the event for the community. Elizabeth Timme is co-founder and leads the LA-Más office, working on projects that seek to establish the potential for design-based outcomes in community health. Timme will join Seleta Reynolds onstage at Dwell on Design Los Angeles to discuss these street-specific projects.
