A tight construction budget informed the choices Sean Guess made as he designed a house for a couple in Austin, Texas. Budget-minded materials, like the James Hardie fiber-cement siding, helped hold construction costs to $130 per square foot. Sherwin-Williams’s Cyberspace hue colors the exterior and Parakeet coats the custom kitchen cabinets by Austin Wood Works. The planter is made from Cor-Ten steel.

The modern addition sits on a concrete platform that extends past the house’s envelope, creating welcoming patios on each side. “From any space within the home you are no more than a few steps from one of the outdoor spaces,” Busick says. On the west-facing back porch, Green Kite Chairs by Karim Rashid and a poppy-red hammock offer ideal spots from which to take in the sunset.

With the house often open to the outside, dust easily drifts in. Fortunately, the concrete floor, speckled with white aggregate mix, is easy to clean.

The Revolution Collection from Fferrone will make you look twice. Deceptively simple at first glance, the sleek glass vessels can be filled from either end, making contents appear to float when filled, adding visual intrigue. Made from borosilicate glass, the pieces are oven, dishwasher and microwave safe.

While the back part of the house originally housed the bathroom and laundry rooms, all but making the adjacent garden inaccessible, the new design places the living and dining spaces in this area to maximize natural light. Commonly available materials are used throughout the home, such as plywood and the industrial tresses that criss-cross the open-plan living area.

The large industrial space allows ample room for large-scale exhibitions, such as The Politics and Pleasures of Food (shown), which has a garden, art, sculptures, and videos.

Busick refreshed the house’s east-facing façade by painting the trim a bold black that echoes the steel addition at the rear.

When one thinks of a chandelier, often an elaborate, shimmery fixture comes to mind. Moseley notes the home’s distinctive staircase as one of her favorite features. "When the steel was ordered from the steelyard," she says, "it was marked with our metalworker’s name, for easy pickup. That scribble still exists in random places in the staircase and is very industrial—we love it!" Hand-welded by Mike Carman, a local contractor, the staircase runs through all three floors, and it was custom-sized to fit the dimensions of the shipping containers, measuring nine-feet-six-inches tall and eight-feet wide.

The refurbished interior of this historic building boasts numerous upcycled features, such as desks made from an old middle school gym floor and sliding doors crafted from bleacher boards, that add up to a relaxed, open environment.
