Announcing: the winners of the 2021 Dwell Design Awards! We’re thrilled to share the projects that wowed our expert judges panel and our readers this year.

From the Central Pavilion: The winner of the Silver Lion, this installation features large scale models of the Paulo Mendes da Rocha’s Serra Dourada Stadium in Brazil and Grafton Architects’ UTEC university campus in Lima. The influence that the Brazilian Pritzker prize has had on the Irish architects is revealed by the researched subjects as “built geography," “abstracted landscape," “landscape and infrastructure,” and “the horizon and the human being” (suggestive of a comparison of the landscapes of Machu Picchu in Peru and Skellig Michael off the west coast of Ireland). It also explores the possibilities of the ‘Free Section’ as a representation and work resource for big scale projects that encourage fluid, generous, open, and massive spaces.

The firm received an Award of Merit from the American Institute of Architects for this project. The house was also featured in Architectural Record (Sept. 1965) and photogrpahed by Julius Shulman (and can be seen in Julius Shulman: Chicago Mid-Century Modernism, published in 2010 by Rizzoli).

This striking residence was designed circa 1964 by H.P. Davis "Deever" Rockwell, an architect who studied at the Illinois Institute of Technology and worked in the office of Mies van der Rohe. Rockwell later helped found the firm Brenner Danforth Rockwell with Daniel Brenner and George Danforth; their notable projects include the renovation of the Madlener House (for the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts), the National Design Center in Marina City, and the first Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago.

The home is 3,600 square feet and sits within almost 2.5 acres overlooking Butterfield Creek in Olympia Fields, IL. It's about a 45 minute drive from Chicago.

The designs features Eau Claire river gravel, exposed aggregate concrete, polished terrazzo, and ample glass walls. Its entire roof is supported by just four tapering poured-in-place concrete columns.

The 510 Cabin is one of Leggitt's designs, executed with the help of student apprentices.

Blu Homes made some additional modifications to the floor planin order to create a larger, grander central Breezespace through the central living space.
