"Use parks to create places people want to hang out in and manage stormwater at the same time," says Inga Saffron, the Pulitzer-prize wining architecture critic for the Philadelphia Inquirer. "The city is under federal mandate to reduce its overflows into rivers when it rains heavily. Moreover, Philadelphia has a real shortage of green space. So it combined these two ideas: Instead of building twenty-five-inch pipes, they will use greenspaces to absorb rainwater. It's the most sustainable thing Philadelphia is doing."

Known for creating pieces that blur the line between functional design and art, designers Andi Kovel and Justin Parker's Slump Vases for Esque are colorful, memorable, and just plain fun to use. The vases come in 12" ($348), 14" ($598), and 18" ($898) sizes, and a range of colors including blue, fuschia, and orange (we are partial to the orange—imagine it holding blooms of varying shades of orange and yellow, or, for contrast, filled with emerald green foliage like salal). Made to order, by hand, in Portland, Oregon.

"We don't have any specific rituals for entertaining, it changes each time depending on the party and the people. Music's always very important as a way to get people to relax and be in the moment. Of course there's always a good glass of wine, great food and flowers, and a few pieces of Dinosaur Designs to add color to the table,” says Ormandy.

KleinReid’s Hawthorne Collection is crafted from handmade porcelain. Each piece is designed with classic curves, creating bold shapes. The Hawthorne Laburnum Vase is finished with KleinReid’s specially developed glaze that is hand-dipped on each piece prior to kiln firing. Once in the kiln, the glaze slowly runs over the porcelain before finally collecting in random drips at the base. The result is an imperfect edge with a three-dimensional quality that resembles cooled candlewax.

Designed in 1936, the Lyngby Vase is one of the most emblematic pieces of Danish porcelain. The vase is so popular that very few original productions remain for sale—most are treasured heirlooms that are passed from generation to generation. The new production maintains the popularity of the original design, largely due to the care and thoughtful attention to the original model in the reproduction. When it premiered in the thirties, the Lyngby Vase was so different from classic porcelain, that it truly stood out and redefined the possibilities of the material. With its distinct shape and modern look, the vase was a sophisticated, new departure from tradition. The vase was reissued in 2011 as an extension of the Lyngby legacy.

“The shapes that the vases make in a space are like punctuations in the space; they can be put together without anything inside them and form [a kind of] urban landscape," Mahdavi says. "Filled with flowers and greenery, they form a natural landscape.”
