Exbury Egg, PAD Studio and Stephen Turner, 2013 Constructed with traditional yacht-building techniques, this 20-foot-long floating oval on an inlet in southern England functions as a self-sufficient studio and home for artist Stephen Turner. His work, which is inspired by water, relies on data he collects here on the rising and ebbing tides.

Welded-sheet steel partitions both carve out a sleeping area and mirror the exterior palette, blurring boundaries between inside and outside. Inspired by the hue of artist Richard Serra’s Cor-Ten sculptures, the Lowreys had all of the steel primed and painted with a hand-mixed blend of matte paint from Sherwin-Williams.

In the warm months, each of the couple's three hens lays an egg a day. "It's a good thing we can only have a few chicken," Snyder says. "That'd be a lot of cholesterol to eat otherwise." Fortunately for Snyder and Martin, the hens' production slows to an egg per week in cool months (and some chickens stop laying eggs altogether in the winter). But even in the summer, the couple has plenty of friends happy to share a scramble.

Having lived, he says, in “a number of houses where the living room is the most adorned and the least used,” it was important for Lazor to create a functional family living space. As the gathering above attests, it worked. The carpet is by InterfaceFLOR, and the armchairs by Blu Dot.

Part of their pitch is that the Portland Press is a made-in-America product whose most delicate part is easily replaced. The challenge of the Douglas fir built-ins was that they had to be made with 60-degree angles in mind. Vincent Pocsik of Marbletecture created the custom walnut dining table to match, and it is surrounded by Blu Dot’s Real Good Chairs.
