Diana Al-Hadid, USA Rockefeller FellowBorn in Syria but living and working in Brooklyn,

Diana Al-Hadid is an artist who creates large, architectural structures. In the same way she balances to cultures, she says she also balances opposites in her works, whether combining the Chartres Cathedral with the Tower of Babel, the secular and the sacred, or ideas of the past with those of the future.

ZAHA HADID

"Zaha describes herself as a gypsy, of no fixed abode. Her memories lie in her childhood home in Baghdad, but she now lives in an open space in London, as dazzling as her smile. Light filters in from a skylight, flooding the space, even on rainy day. Some of her early designs, inspired by the revolutionary Russian artist El Lissitzky, hang on the walls. Then there is a multitude of portraits, pieces of furniture and objects, shapes that define the space, marking out a new avant-garde, Zaha Hadid’s style." Photo by Davide Pizzigoni.

Fudge Hair Pop-Up Salon (London, United Kingdom: 2012)

Created for London Fashion Week, this gorgeous black-and-white space by Zaha Hadid was a perfect setting for the brand to play up an edgy, angular style. A massive, white sculpture resting in the corner looked like a jagged glacier.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates-Only really gaining the world’s attention within the last few decades, Dubai has quickly established itself as a powerhouse of construction and luxury. Although its architecture can’t rival Rome’s or China’s in historical value, Dubai is a fascinating junction of engineering and artistic design. Tom Wright’s Burj Al Arab was constructed atop one of Dubai’s many man-made islands; its claim to fame is not just its sharp, modern aesthetic, but also its complex engineering feat. If the ubiquity of its image means anything today, Burj Al Arab stands as one of the most memorable structures of the latter 20th century. Photo by: David Weekly.

Heatherwick Studios designed this Abu Dhabi park to work with the challenging desert environment. Proposed structural features, such as a cracked canopy that mimics the landscape’s natural reaction to the blistering heat, are meant to provide shade and reduces evaporation. Designed by Russian-born architect Al Mansfeld, the museum is located atop Neveh Sha’anan, the Hill of Tranquility, in Jerusalem. The structure was a cutting-edge example of modular building: it consists of 120-square-foot units that can be grouped together or sit on their own.

On Kawara Stamp Kit by Et Al., Etc.

“EtAlEtcStampKit” $135 for the set

"At Subports we make it a point to send hand written or adorned mail whenever possible. Just the other day we sent a ransom note styled envelope containing a check over to our friends at Vena Cava. We are still awaiting for our own On Kawara stamp kit to arrive from Japan, and when it does it will definitely put to good use. The On Kawara stamp kit includes seven holds (1-5 line, one oval, one round), a black stamp pad, and 4mm (upper/lowercase and special characters) and 6mm (upper and special characters) letters organized in seven small cases. An empty case is included for letters that stray. An homage to Japan’s most notable conceptual artist and his series of “Date paintings”. Made in Japan in 2010 by Tokyo design firm, Et Al., Etc."

Architect Bergendy Cooke, who worked for Zaha Hadid and Peter Marino before returning to her home country in 2007, is an admirer of the strong, sculptural architectural forms that appear in Japanese and Spanish architecture. Outside Queenstown, she put her ideas into practice in a home that would be the benchmark for bc+a studio, her own venture. The combination bunk bed and playhouse is a whimsical gesture the architect designed specifically for her two daughters. The spaces are organized in such a way that they can play independently or together.
