ICON developed its Vulcan I 3D printer over a period of about two years. The gantry-style printer on rails is mobile and weighs about 2,000 pounds.

The owners wanted to have a clear distinction between the more public areas of the home and the more private ones. In the master bathroom, which is on the lower floor, tiles were used from the Italian company Trend.

Marble is a beautiful natural material—but one of our industry experts thought it received too much attention in 2022.

“The Low Poly Pokémon project started as a challenge,” says their designer Flowalistik. “I wanted to try to transform the low-quality graphics the first Pokémon video games had into a 3D model." The resulting forms can be printed in a wide range of materials—it depends on your local 3D printer—though the plastic seen here is most common.

“I like to work with the front door open, so I get as much natural light as possible,” Jung says. “Being in LA, the weather is gorgeous pretty much everyday. I work in silence so the only thing you hear is a light breeze that comes through the entire studio."

Jung worked in various graphic design studios before realizing that she had very little interest in graphic design and even less interest in working for someone else. When she was 26, she quit her job and started the creative studio Brook&Lyn.

This "local prefab" home on the Isle of Skye is made mostly from materials sourced in northern Scotland. The timber-framed model, meant to evoke the simple agrarian barns of the area, can be constructed on-site in as little as a day and is designed for affordability.

Besides color, Jung finds inspiration in everyday things—“from a block of tofu that I translate into a woven piece, to a found piece of tree bark that dictates the entire design/flow of the weavings.”

“Weaving is just another medium for me,” says Jung. “Our next immediate project involves turning the weavings into 3-D sculptural forms.”

One of Jung biggest inspirations is color. “With the weavings,” she says, “I'm free to go wild. And the wilder I go the better they become. I start each project with a single color that I'm drawn to, then I build around it.”

Depending on the size, a weaving can take anywhere from 30 hours to three weeks to complete. “I add then subtract over and over until it's right.”

“Something about the sun filled days, lush green surroundings of our new LA home, and my new life seemed to align with weaving so perfectly, and it stuck,” Jung says. “My friends and I joke that (East) LA is the land of ceramics and fiber arts—everyone is doing it, buying it and pinning it!”

Mimi Jung graduatied from Cooper Union with a degree in Fine Art, studied graphic design in Basel, Switzerland, and worked as a print designer in Germany for a bit before moving back to the States to pursue book design full-time—“because that was the only ‘employable’ skill I had acquired.”

The side walls have been treated as vertical extension of the horizontal surface of the garden, and are used for growing climbers such as jasmine, grapes, honeysuckle, raspberries, beans, peas, and even a climbing fig. Colorful bird’s houses and bug hotels are also mounted on the walls.

Smith Pavilion by Studio Weave The London-based architecture practice will infuse their pop-up pavilion with the history of the central London borough’s makers and builders. Constructed from fibre-cement panels, a material made by re-appropriating an old paper mill and spinning-machine, the interior will feature CNC-cut panels that will tell the story of tools and gear used by neighborhood artisans. Inspired by the traditional basket-weaving techniques of the Philippines, the Coiled Stool is comprised of hand-woven threads over a rattan core. Shaped in a classic tractor seat, the stool rests on four gmelina wood legs, and can be used in formal and casual environments alike. From the array of colors to the supersoft lambs-wool to the intricate way the yarns are woven, this covering from Wallace + Sewell offers much to rave about.

"Shane enjoys both cooking and entertaining so we maximized the counter space to make meal prep and hosting easy," Priftaj says. "It was also very important that the kitchen include a gas grill so he could quickly and conveniently grill without having to climb up five flights of stairs to use the bbq on the patio." Priftaj selected high-gloss acrylic white cabinets from bulthaup's b3 line with an aluminum backsplash and b3 prism drawer system to keep things tidy. A Wolf hood and gas cooktop with chargrill give Carslake the flexibility he desired for indoor grilling. The counters are polished white quartz.

When Abbie and Bill Burton hired Marmol Radziner to design their prefab weekend home, their two requests were “simple-simple, replaceable materials,” says Abbie—such as concrete floors (poured offsite in Marmol Radziner's factory) and metal panel siding—and “the ability to be indoors or outdoors with ease.” Deep overhangs provide shade and protection from rain, so the Burtons can leave their doors open year-round and hang out on their 70-foot-long deck even in inclement weather. They visit the house once a month, usually for a week at a time, with Vinnie and Stella, their rescue Bernese Mountain dogs. Their two adult children occasionally join them. The couple hopes to one day retire here.

Made from ABS plastic, a common 3D printing material, the Bristol Chair capitalizes on the complexity possible with additive manufacturing. "When talking to designers," says Bitonti, "I try to impress that [3D printing] has its own unique materials and process... they try to design for injection molding but they need sensibilities and knowledge appropriate to this medium. Additive processes are their own thing with their own advantages."

This "surfboard" is designed purely in 3-D CAD software, 3-D printed via Selective Laser Sintering by SciCon Technologies in Valencia, California, and assembled at Karten Design in Marina Del Rey, California.

Since the home is something of a pied-à-terre for the clients, its design is geared more toward short-term stays than full-time living. That means spaces like the kitchen are set up for entertaining. Notice the curve on the cabinetry, counter, and backsplash, which is Calacatta Macchia Vecchia marble. All of the appliances are from Fisher & Paykel, and the wall sconce is a Gabriel Scott single Welles pendant in smoked glass and brushed brass.

A single bowl sink is self-explanatory: it consists of a sink that is not divided up into separate areas.
