“On April 1, 2014, Peet’s will be 48 years old,” says Michael Williams, Vice President of Store Development. “Retail is an evolution and this is a new chapter in our story. Quality, craft, and passion are our core tenets and we wanted to insert that into the store environment.”

Debbie Kristofferson, Vice President of Brand and Creative Strategy for Peets, says customer feedback about the previous retail experience wasn’t on par with how they felt about the coffee. “We wanted to tell the brand’s story in a way that will be meaningful, interesting, and will connect with people,” she says.

A wood-paneled bar is the first stop inside (we recommend the cappuccino). The company hopes the Union Square shop, with its espresso bar and an additional spacious lounge, will become a welcome spot for coffee lovers to linger. "San Francisco is a natural fit for Nespresso because the epicurean city is known for its appreciation for premium coffee offerings and quality products,” says Nespresso President Frederic Levy. The bar serves light breakfast, lunch, and dinner - featuring locally-sourced fare - in addition to espresso and espresso-based drinks.

Described as the "West Coast Boutique Bar," the new shop at 90 Grant Avenue is the West Coast flagship for Nespresso, the global coffee company that sells portioned, premium coffees and machines. It's a neat model of integrated hardware and product paired with personalized service, and the retail store is a similarly design-driven experience with different stations for buying, trying, and lounging.

The lower level features dark wood paneling and dramatic color. Individual coffee portions, machines, and accessories appear to pop like gems. It's all in vibrant contrast to the street-level floor's light, white scheme - and has the effect of feeling like you're descending into a hold of treasure from an open-air deck above.

Williams and his team developed a material palette for the new design that they could easily deploy on a national scale: oak, steel, brick, concrete, and Carrara marble. He describes the flagship’s renovation as a type of urban archaeology. “Every building has its own special attributes and we try to discover that,” Williams says. “This one had 80 years of previous tenants and their ideas and we stripped it back. This was the most honest way to express the structure.” Since Peet’s doesn’t own any of its buildings, flexibility was key and finding a mix of materials that would work in nearly any renovation but still look unified as a whole was a challenge.

Alleged Party Hats by Heather Grace/Alleged

"AllegedPartyHats" $200.00 for a set of 5

"I (Will) recently had a small dinner party with 5 people in my tiny Brooklyn apartment. After we ate, the single malt mysteriously filled up in our wine glasses and these amazing party hats sprouted on our heads. What was supposed to be a quiet dinner with friends turned into a rager of a party, and it was all due to these amazing hand crafted hats. Each set of 5 is different. You never know what you'll be getting when you order these from Heather. They take about 4 weeks to be crafted and sent out. Worth the wait and the party!" photo by Jacob Krupnick
