Coffee Talk

While some resign themselves to the coffee shop, the resourceful caffeine lover knows better. A cup of coffee sipped at home from your favorite mug is a much better way to launch into your day than a barrage of goateed baristas, surcharges for “hot,” and a tragic display case of objectionable croissants.

(Drip, machine, espresso, or even in the form of a table, we all love coffee. Read here for more great products.)

Kaj Franck's Kartio glassware sheds all things unnecessary and superfluous. The result is a timeless aesthetic that stuns with pure geometric shapes embellished only by gentle colors—as Franck put it, "the only decoration needed." Each perfectly balanced piece is simple, yet durable enough for everyday use, infused with the feeling that it could not have been designed any other way. The collection includes a carafe (shown) and small and large tumblers.

Le Whaf by The Lab Store Paris, $165

In no way necessary, though novel and nerdy: Pulsating crystals in the bottom of this carafe turn any liquid into clouds you can inhale. Pour it, then consume with a glass straw to sample flavors without the calories (or alcoholic content).

The subway tile-lined bathroom was kept as simple as possible, with Hansgrohe fixtures and cabinets made of vertical-grain Douglas fir above a top-mounted Duravit sink. Since installing a window was unfeasible given the bathroom's proximity to other properties, Storey added a skylight over the shower.

While we’re on the subject of tracking emerging talents of the design world, we’re always excited to see the latest from London-based designer Liliana Ovalle, who hails from Mexico (look for our profile on her in our upcoming April issue). As part of the Talents à la Carte exhibition at this year’s Maison & Objet, Ovalle was invited to present some new pieces. Her Cumulo series, a delicate carafe and glassware collection featuring an overlapping pattern of lines that, when grouped together, present a moiré pattern. By sharing this work at the show, Ovalle is hoping to snag the interest of manufacturer who can help bring it to market.

“Peter and I’ve got shockingly similar and far-reaching design inspirations. Our conversations would move easily from brutalism to driftwood

to kachinas and then flow right back to something applicable to architecture. I can’t tell you how many times I will do that with a less-design-literate client and just get a blank stare!” —Architect Craig Steely
