Provenzano says the mullion-less glass corners were sited to be as close to the outside perimeter as possible to provide an crystal-clear viewing experience.

In the dining area, a single glass expanse provides a view to the backyard. "All of our efforts surrounding the glass are to make spaces have no visual barriers between inside and outside," says Provenzano.

The Lift is both a functional serving piece and an attractive decorative accent. Handcrafted in brushed brass and finished in brushed copper, the Lift includes a circular tray and three balanced supporting legs. The middle of the tray features a simple open circle, adding a sense of cohesion to the piece. The Lift was designed by Felicia Ferrone and is available in two sizes.

As the roof had to be clear for fire department access, Baker developed a cantilevered frame for double-sided solar collectors that is elevated a few feet above the rooftop. The frame’s tilted configuration actually allows the panels to collect more energy than traditional flat designs. Seen here before the panels were installed, the frame holds sixteen photovoltaic collectors and is a 3KV system—large enough to generate more energy than the house requires in a single year.

Restorick also built this quirky oak staircase with open shelving along one side. "I use accessories as the color in spaces," says Tyler, "so these items are an integral part of the overall design."

Collector's Suite

Much of the furniture in the public spaces is vintage, sourced from local shops and collectors.

Niki and Gustavo splurged on more permanent finishes and budgeted on items, like faucets and shelves, that could be easily upgraded over time.

Bret is an avid record collector, and his collection fills a corner of the space.

Another ITEM contribution: a fist-shaped candle from Brazil, said to bring good luck ($30).

The patio of Collector's Retreat by Heliotrope Architects allows the homeowners to gaze out into a sea of trees.

Vibrant blue cabinets brighten up this kitchen and serve as a bold contrast to the exposed brick. The stainless-steel countertop wraps slightly up the wall, and creates a trough for storing items.

“Not a drop of water is wasted here,” Nina says of the yard. “This is huge for Mexico City. The whole terrace is a water collector.”

This room is dedicated to smaller items, from leather iPad cases to ceramicware to colorful fabric-covered storage boxes.

My new favorite items at my house: two Jens Quistgaard mills, reissued by Dansk for Crate and Barrel.

The window in the living room is framed by built-in shelves. The owners are collectors of local craft and design, and had ventilation grids custom-made specifically for the renovation.

The couple are avid toy and art collectors. Most of large paintings and sculptures seen around the house are designed by Taiwanese artist No2Good 不二良 .
