To highlight the existing architecture of the home, Hill retained the dark polish of the casement windows, which she finds enhances period details instead of undermining them. In the rear sunroom, the vintage Case Study furniture pieces with Plexiglas bases are from Metro Retro in Houston. A Bourgie lamp by Kartell is atop an old marble end table by Knoll, and the Gan kilim rug pictures a branch motif echoed in the kitchen and breakfast room.

The snug attic in this former fisherman’s cottage in Copenhagen contains the homeowner’s platform bed, custom-designed by Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen to maximize storage and fit the unusual space.

The low windows in the master bedroom focus the view on the backyard, not the neighbors. Christopher designed the solid poplar platform bed.

In the master bedroom, a basic platform bed and Ikea wall lights keep the attention on the ocean views afforded by the floor-to-ceiling windows.

For bedrooms that have windows, it can be challenging to place the bed so that it doesn't obstruct views. At this home with clerestory windows, the platform bed in the master bedroom can sit comfortably below the window while still allowing in daylight. The wood bed frame, crafted by a local woodworker, gives the illusion of a taller ceiling because it’s so low.

As per the owner's request, the second floor’s open landing receives ample sunlight. The space is used as a study and the home's two bedrooms are situated to the right, their doors just outside the frame.

A guest bedroom leads to a private deck.

Urbangreen selected walnut wood coated in a clear, low-VOC finish for the custom bunk beds. "It brings out the natural beauty and detail of of the grain," says Elias Didaskalou of Urbangreen. The walnut staircase and slide in a Chicago town house leads from the main level to the basement. To protect people on the ride down, a “crash pad” fashioned from a standard gymnastic mat covers the wall at the slide’s base.

Minnesota–based Eastvold Furniture designs and produces high-quality furnishings that blend modern innovation and classic style. This platform bed is the first of its kind—it is comprised of sixteen layers of North American maple wood that is then framed in a warm North American walnut wood veneer.

A large, circular opening with sliding glass doors leads to the curved terrace on the front of each structure. For one of the terraces, the architects designed a cutout to accommodate a mature tree that continues to grow through the platform.

Furniture designer Pat Carson created a plethora of custom fixtures for this guest room, including a riveted aluminum Murphy bed. The best Murphy beds raise and lower easily, often requiring only one hand. This unique wall bed employs a hand-cranked wheel-and-pulley system.

Historic centres usually have a clear, harmonious melody, but oftentimes the soundscapes of the outer layers of a city are disrupted, lacking a conductor able to integrate architectonic interventions throughout space and time.

He built the walnut bed and nightstands in the master bedroom with the help of Hannah’s two brothers. One of his clients at his hair salon gave him the American flag; the bedside lights are Tolomeo classic wall lamps by Artemide. The bed linens are from Inhabit. A sliding barn door rolls sideways to reveal the bathroom.

The interior is furnished with contemporary pieces that don’t detract from views of the surrounding valley.

Copeland’s MiMo series is a portmanteau for Miami Modernist Architecture, as is revealed in the use of elegant materials alongside minimalist styling. The collection blends wood with metallic details, and is comprised of both solid maple hardwood with a white finish, American black walnut wood, and luxe bronze legs. The juxtaposition of the two hardwoods gives the MiMo Bed added visual interest, while the simple silhouette maintains the minimalist look of the modernist period. A true platform bed, the MiMo is ideal for small rooms, or as a centerpiece in a master suite. Although inspired by Miami modernism, the walnut headboard lends a rich, warm quality to the bed that will communicate with all styles.

Locally sourced, low-emitting materials were used inside and out. The floors throughout are bamboo.

The Case Study Ceramic Cylinder Planter was originally designed during the post-WW2 architecture and design period. The ceramic planter is defined by its basic geometric shape—a cylinder—and its simple, clean finish. A Brazilian walnut stand elevates the ceramic planter from the floor.

The kids’ room of the Milford Residence in Portland, Oregon is outfitted with a cheerful orange Case Study daybed from Modernica and a selection of vintage maps and artwork.

Both bedrooms now glory in the inlet views.

Corner Window

The Case Study Alpine Platform Bed takes a functional home furnishing and recasts it as an attractive, sculptural accent. The first bed of its kind, the Alpine Platform Bed is defined by its simple silhouette, fluid lines, and layers of molded wood. The entire structure of the bed, inclusive of the headboard and legs, are comprised of 16 layers of North American maple wood and top and bottom veneers of North American walnut wood. Featuring a purposeful angle, the headboard is designed to give back support while reading or watching television. The curved rails at the foot of the bed secure the mattress in place, preventing sliding or shifting. The Case Study Alpine Platform Bed was inspired by the traditional craftsmanship of vintage sporting equipment, including wooden skis, kayaks, and bentwood tennis rackets.

The custom leather platform bed was designed by Shikany’s firm, PS Studios.

Jonas runs up the custom walnut stairwell, with inset Corian handrail, that leads up to the second-floor master suite.

Hidden Storage The Murphy bed in the guest bedroom sits behind Montague’s desk, allowing the compact room to function comfortably for working and sleeping at different times. “The walnut unit between the kitchen and dining room ties into the fumed oak floor,” Dubbeldam says. “The rest of the materials in the house—glass, marble, stone—were selected to offset the wood.”
