Rolling Huts (Winthrop, United States)

A series of six modernist huts created by Tom Kundig of Olson Kundig Architects, the Rolling Huts look like rustic case study homes, a herd of designer cabins that just may exemplify the term 'glamping.' Elevated on stilts, the 200-square-foot structures offer another level of outdoor accommodation.

Architect Rocio Romero designs ADUs that are conceived as studios, backyard offices, guest cottages, and short-term getaways. She’s sold over 50 prefab units in 17 different states, and recently launched a series of more modestly sized, construct-it-yourself structures dubbed the Camp series. The 456-square-foot Base Camp and 312-square-foot Fish Camp will both be priced in the $20,000 range. At just over 300 square feet, the Fish Camp is the smaller of the two Camp styles, but the prototype illustrates its utility as guesthouse or office.

Built for a Brand

Facu Fernandez and his colleagues Nati Lucero and Maxi Ciovich built Refugio for Camping, a space that reflected its focus on local beer and wine and the outdoor lifestyle. With its small footprint, garden of plants, and transparent exterior, the Refugio project captured that sense of openness, versatility, and abandon. It Met added a dozen custom tables to complete the casual outdoor space.

A Green Lantern on the Rooftop

“We wanted to create a place that could embrace the frantic dynamics of a bar in a natural environment, but without loosing touch with the technical details,” says architect Facu Fernandez. “In the end, it's just a metal structure with big wooden boxes and plants growing all around it, a big green lantern on the roof of a building.”

HOUNDSTOOTH DOGTENT

Diehard design lovers leave nothing to chance when it comes to outfitting their kids and pets. Though the style options for four-legged consumers haven't necessarily caught up with the design industry for the toddler set, there's more to pet pampering than doggie couture. Jon Santos, founder of the New York-based graphic design studio Common Space, created a canine camp shelter that does dog design right.
