A wall-mounted oak bar is where Siminovich and Kerner drop their keys, pound away on their laptops, and occasionally eat a quick meal with Matilda, their two-year-old daughter.

Designed by Andrea Stemmer for SCP, the Jules Mirror is an unframed, rectangular portrait mirror that works well in an entryway or above a bureau or vanity. The mirror features a solid oak storage shelf at its base, which can be used to hold knickknacks, makeup, keys, or favorite photographs and postcards.

If you don’t have to have cabinetry installed or shelves drilled onto your bathroom walls, one good idea is to create recessed wall shelves for storage. This will help conserve floor space. You can even create recessed wall in corners.

A modular shelf system by Alu provides a more sculptural take on the classic bathroom vanity in this Toronto home.

This home in Melbourne by design duo Kathryn Robson and Susie Cohen has deep nook shelves at one end of the wardrobe, which gives the bathroom a warm, natural and organic feel.

ROAR Architects updated a former women’s refuge in London’s Kentish Town Conservation Area into two interconnected flats for a brother-and-sister duo. Housed in a historic Victorian, each of the flats have their own entrance. The interiors are also differentiated by their distinct color palettes and materials, which the architects designed to reflect the personality of each sibling.

In the guest bathroom, Givone installed a hand-chiseled sink made of 17th-century marble quarried from the hills outside of Rome.

For guest bathrooms, where only minimal storage systems are needed, why not go light and vertical with a modular floor-mounted Autopole shelf system with a mirror, soap dish, hand towels, and a tray hang by Alu that frees up floor space.

“With their careful planning, use of light and color, and the elimination of all unnecessary elements, even the smallest room in the hotel feels spacious,” says Kurilenko.

The Shelf from Sabi is a simple floating shelf designed to provide flexible storage solutions. The Shelf can be installed above a bathroom sink, on a bathroom wall, shower wall, or in another interior space within the home. Available in two sizes and colors, Shelf can be grouped with others to create more storage space, or used on its own in a smaller space.

A sink located on lower level was installed as a place to wash off sand after returning from the beach—which is just a 10-minute walk away. The sink, wall, and flooring surrounding it are made of marés. Part of the flooring bears resembles to terrazzo; called "trespol," it's a mix of cement, marés powder, and small pebbles. Unlike terrazzo, the top surface of trespol is not polished.

Smooth, handleless joinery are a classical, but nonetheless creative way to make storage systems beautifully discreet with ample room for storage.

The eponymous founder and principal of Michael K. Chen Architecture resuscitated a four-story, 3,600-square-foot home in Brooklyn’s Clinton Hill neighborhood that was built in 1895 and had been abandoned for 20 years. Its newest owners—a tech investor and an art teacher at a public school—were inspired by the playful color palette that was still apparent underneath the building’s decay. "We had epic color palette meetings, looking at deck after deck for paint colors that spoke to us or provoked a particular sensation,” says Chen. “You don’t look at the color, you inhabit it.”

The couple added a half-bathroom to the main level and replaced the tiling, costing them around $6,600 combined.

The walls and surfaces had to resist damage from ski gear, so the architects used hot-rolled steel and fiber cement boards usually reserved for industrial structures. The steel serves double duty in the kitchen, where wares are mounted to the wall with magnets. The kitchen features a Miele cooktop and oven and Liebherr refrigerator. Stools by Crate and Barrel provide additional seating.

The folded, Anamorphosis Mirror by Valérie Windeck can be wall-mounted and used for applying makeup, or as a work of art. Available in the Dwell Store.
