Martino Gamper staged a residency at Milan's La Rinascente department store, in collaboration with Serpentine Gallery in London, in which he "repaired" items brought to him by the public.

Klopf Architecture, Arterra Landscape Architects, and Flegels Construction joined forces to refurbish this Palo Alto Eichler. Standout features include a fully opening glass wall, an outdoor living area with a kitchen and fire pit, and furniture by Kayu and Primary Pouf.

“Where we let loose was on the window,” Matt says. “It’s an aluminium window frame, which is bushfire compliant and easy to install, but the way that we detailed it was about hiding the frame so that the eye is drawn into the space.”

Over time, shingles had been added on the front facade. Referencing Claude Oakland's original drawings, the firm removed and replaced them with vertical grain Kayu-Batu siding. The balconies, also covered with wood shingles, received a plaster finish.

Located on the sixth floor, the restaurant WA offers a tour of Japanese cuisine. “WA visits various places in Japan on a regular basis, discovering the flavors embedded in the local culture and delivering them to the customers,” says the brand. “It enables customers to enjoy the richness of Japanese culture through food.”

The design of Kayu Kayu Restaurant melds the backgrounds of its proprietors: a wood craftsmen, a furniture maker, and a garment artisan. Heavy logs are suspended over the heads of visitors to create an illusion of lightness, but simultaneously to shade the interior from sun peering through the western facade. Mirrored staircases spiral around a giant Alstonia tree that hovers over a koi fishpond. The first floor holds a restaurant and café, while the second floor serves as an event space with a bar and a terrace overlooking the garden area. Huge skylights provide plenty of natural lighting, and the structure features exemplary wood and steel joinery by local craftsmen and locally sourced materials.

The installation "In a State of Repair" seeks to highlight the work of craftspeople, artisans, and technicians who repair things that break. Martino Gamper, a designer and the exhibition's curator, hopes this inspires people to keep the belongings they have instead of throwing them away if they break.

The Atmosphere collection is a strong, minimalist mix of powder-coated aluminium frames paired with Gloster’s signature teak and cleverly designed panels that have been upholstered with weather-resistant outdoor fabric from Sunbrella. Cecilie thoughtfully selected the Gloster-exclusive palette in muted, modern shades to complement the silvery grey patina the wood will eventually adopt.
