The master bedroom boasts a 1970s tufted headboard from Heals Leather and a wall covering of burlap, wool and silk by David Hicks. The bed covering is vintage, 1950s, and the Blocks linen basket was designed by Donna Wilson and made by the People of the Sun, a nonprofit based in Malawi.

Mika, Kiku, and Kaz'ma play in the tatami room beneath the big skylight. The cushions on the floor were sent from Japan by the childrens's grandmother. The tatami mats were actually purchased in the UK from the Futon Company. Gaffney notes that they're not the proper dimensions of Japanese tatami mats, but they were much less expensive than importing the real thing.

Named the Tatami House, the houseboat resembles the size and layout of traditional Japanese tatami rooms. "We used the tatami as a grid for the house," explains Julius Taminiau, referring to how tatami—a rectangular straw mat typically measuring 35 by 70 inches—dictates the size and proportion of traditional Japanese spaces.
