Brooklyn-based Haptic Lab designs a range of textile items, from intricate quilts to one-of-a-kind kites. The handmade Sailing Ship Kite is designed by Haptic Lab in collaboration with Balinese artisans. This kite is a modern take on a classic toy that savvy kids will love.

This artful bedding exemplifies the free-form shapes motif that’s popping up on everything from bathmats to wallpaper.

A lightweight nylon-and-bamboo frigate that sails the skies on windy days, this whimsical kite from Brooklyn-based Haptic Lab is easy to assemble and operate.

Fischer and Haptic Lab also create kites, from classic diamond-shaped kites with a patchwork tail, to innovative sailing ship kites. Fischer explains, “An interesting quality of haptics is the ability of our body's sense of touch to be extended—it's actually our only physical sense that can be extended beyond our body. For example, when someone uses a cane to guide themselves safely down a sidewalk, the tip of that cane acts like the tip of their finger. Similarly, kites allow us to experience the sensation of flight.”

A custom steel and red oak ship ladder in the main living area is another space-saving solution. The door is Douglas fir and the shelving is mesquite wood; an Eames lounge chair can be seen in the master bedroom.

Living Room: Of course if you really want to make a big impact then a new rug is in order. Designed by Alyson Fox in collaboration with Hawkins New York, the Shapes Dhurrie Rug is based off of Alyson’s artwork, which is largely inspired by the work of Josef Albers and the paintings of Piet Mondrian.

The computer-designed kitchen area has the feel of a ship's galley, with everything neatly stowed, yet visible and instantly at hand: It's much the definition of "ship-shape." For dinner parties, well-worn Eames shell chairs are pulled down by David, with the help of a footstool. "I have nearly an eight-foot reach," says the 6'3'' David. ("It gets a little tough if I have to spend a weekend or so alone," says Im.)

Lewis descends a metal-tube set of stairs fabricated by a maker of ship’s ladders. A bannister from the original restaurant stairway serves as a railing for the sleeping loft.

The SSB is made of four pieces that slot together to create the central V design and comes in two types of wood or steel. It can hold an open cookbook in the kitchen, display favorite titles in the living room, and it also works well for kids.

The resulting building, its angular form inspired by Japanese origami—was designed and built in two and a half months in early 2007.

Rich Brilliant Willing’s Delta Floor Lamp is a flawless marrying of traditional and modern design. Utilizing the established box pleat technique, Delta is comprised of folded fabric in a unique silhouette that creates a more contemporary look of the familiar lampshade. The concrete floor takes on a silky appearance in the kitchen and dining areas. The Gideå table is from IKEA, the Karim Rashid Oh chairs are from Umbra, and the Erik Magnussen kerosene Ship’s lamp is by Stelton.

The aptly named Chunk Candleholder from Menu is a solid, substantial piece that looks purposeful and strong when set on a shelf or table. The cylindrical marble slab features a copper top, which counters the organic, raw nature of the marble with sophisticated shine. The result is a well-balanced accent that is an attractive decorative element whether it is holding a candle or resting on its own. It is also available in a smaller size.

Kaj Franck's Kartio glassware sheds all things unnecessary and superfluous. The result is a timeless aesthetic that stuns with pure geometric shapes embellished only by gentle colors—as Franck put it, "the only decoration needed." Each perfectly balanced piece is simple, yet durable enough for everyday use, infused with the feeling that it could not have been designed any other way. YStudio Mechanical Brass Pencil, $100 at the Dwell Store Everyone will want to swap an old No. 2 pencil for this heirloom-quality brass instrument from YStudio. Weighty when in hand, this pencil gives a sense of purpose to note taking, doodles, or sketching. The materials used in the pencil allow it to oxidize over time, creating a distinct patina. The quirky duck harmonizes both modern and traditional timer technology.

Designed by Jasper Morrison for Flos Lighting in 2003, the Mini Glo-Ball Table Light is a petite addition to Morrison’s Glo-Ball series.
