FELT SPHERE CARPET Like high style confetti or graphic color pixels, this ultra-soft felt carpet is made of spherical felt pieces woven together artfully in a vibrant spectrum of shades. These whimsical, one-of-a-kind floor coverings add instant pop to any room.

Chris Grimley and Kelly Smith transformed a cramped apartment into a family-friendly home. The room shared by Mae, three, and her little brother Roen, one, features a custom prototype mural by FilzFelt, their mother’s textile design company. The carpet is by Flor, and the child-size chair and Amoeba table are both by Jens Risom for Knoll.

Fanions by Swiss design trio Linn Kandel, Dimitri Bahler, and Ismael Studer is a collection of three wool felt rugs that offer yet another optical illusion, tricking the eye into glimpses of a three-dimensional object.

Moooi, whose founder, Marcel Wanders, spoke as keynote at Dwell on Design Los Angeles, shared the larger-than-life Eden Queen rug.

Arbel’s “14” sconces spot the wall to ethereal effect in the master bedroom. “I wanted this place to be habitable. One of my greatest criticisms of modern architecture is that it often forgets to make things cozy.”

Opposing magnets keep the 3/4-pound black sphere floating above the base, and the speaker unit housed inside is rechargeable—pull it from the floating base and plug it in, and a full charge gets 15 hours of playback.

Having lived, he says, in “a number of houses where the living room is the most adorned and the least used,” it was important for Lazor to create a functional family living space. As the gathering above attests, it worked. The carpet is by InterfaceFLOR, and the armchairs by Blu Dot.

For those seeking to add texture to their timepiece, there's always the Felt Wall Clock desgined by Sebastian Herkner for Leff. Its 60 percent recycled PET felt even has sound-absorbing properties.

Dutch design firm Moooi, whose co-founder, Marcel Wanders, addressed Dwell on Design Los Angeles earlier this year, debuted a new line of vivid carpets.

Carpet by Steffen Kehrle Broadloom carpets are constantly in motion during the production process, with hundreds of rolls pushing forward a near-infinite length of flooring. Kehrle, who has done product and exhibition design for companies like Muji, Fiat and L’Abbate, was struck when he was observing the coloring process. A sleek ceiling fan and matching accent lights blend into the dark wooden background in this tropical hideaway.

The large expanses of glass frame views that were perfectly planned. The seating areas are furnished with Scandia lounge chairs that were designed by Hans Brattrud in the 1950s and are now being produced by Fjordfiesta.

The dining room, which organically extends from the living room, opens to a deck via sliding glass doors.

The home's entry stairway is bookended a by glass-ensconced guest room that doubles as a music room, and a home office.

The feel of natural materials on the skin can make a home comforting. A Colour Carpet by Scholten & Baijings for HAY, made with 100% New Zealand wool, defines the play area in the child’s bedroom of this house in Hamburg, Germany.

Tanya Aguiñiga Tanya Aguiñiga created the Chiapas stool after working with Mayan weavers in Mexico. "The women create beautiful animals out of hand woven fabrics," Aguiñiga says. "These stools are inspired by the animals and are hand-woven fabric with a wool felt bottom."

Dining

As an introvert and an artist, Leen has a strong aesthetic sensibility. "I always go for the most simple design," she says.
