The glass-enclosed master bedroom floats above the corrugated, oxidized steel exterior.

For the seating area, the couple selected a Charles sofa by Antonio Citterio for B&B Italia in addition to CH07 Shell chairs by Hans Wegner, a PK61 coffee table by Poul Kjærholm, and a Nesta rug from Design Within Reach. The dining table, an original design by Burnette, is surrounded by stools that belonged to a previous owner.

Atherton's bedroom also contains a miniature piano; outside is a red bud tree, an appealing spot for mellow contemplation.

Inside, Kaiser crafted a curved interior that matches the silo's circular footprint. "I didn’t want to cheat and do a box inside a curved shell," he says. "I wanted it to feel like the inside and outside were born of the same mentality." Scrap walnut plank flooring purchased on Craigslist for $350 accounted for most of the interior wood. It's paired with black steel touches. Everything in this room is custom—Kaiser designed the curved-faced cabinets, the dining table, the sofa, and the lamp that has hooks for pots and pans. The countertops are Corian. The Eames Wire Chairs are one of the only non-custom elements.

Chandler City Hall; Chandler, Arizona SmithGroupJJR Considering the environment and Chandler citizens, the team at SmithGroupJJR focused on designing a community courtyard. The courtyard is filled with desert plants and permeable ground cover, both of which reconnect the town with its rural heritage and promote water conservation. Additionally, the west side of the building features a “Turbulent Shade:” a hinged structure with 1,800 perforated stainless steel panels to protect the building from the sun.

ASU Polytechnic Academic District; Mesa, Arizona RSP Architects and Lake|Flato The architect teams wanted to design ASU’s campus in a way that would reflect the surrounding desert climate. They maximized shade by grouping the new LEED gold buildings in dense clusters and creating courtyards and arcades to maximize airflow. The teams also removed 14 acres of asphalt and concrete sidewalk and replaced it with indigenous plants, which will help alleviate solar heat gain and reestablish the native habitat. ASU hopes that this will increase the amount of pedestrians and build a community around this former commuter campus.

Henkel North American Consumer Products Headquarters (Scottsdale, Arizona: 2010) Building in the Sonoran desert doesn’t immediately bring the word “sustainable” to mind. This 348,000-square-foot Scottsdale office space for Henkel, a German consumer goods company, is a stylish rejoinder to that impression. Here, nature is put to work. The roof is covered in a 1.5-acre garden of native plants, with solar panels that power the building’s banks of washers and dryers, a substantial green gesture for a company that makes laundry detergent. And the exterior, designed by CH2M Hill and Will Bruder + Partners, features custom glass etched in a pattern that reduces the intensity of the sunlight and a breathable skylight over the central atrium. Chandler City Hall (Chandler, Arizona: 2010) If only government was always this responsible. Built without accruing debt, the LEED Platinum-certified Chandler City hall, designed by SmithGroup, accomplishes a myriad of goals: bringing public space to Chicago Street in the city center, providing significant energy savings, and creating a public centerpiece for Chandler. The quartzite-clad structure also has fun being responsible: water from the HVAC system cascades in a waterfall down the north side of a parking tower, and the kinetic sculpture “Turbulent Shade,” and interactive set of steel hinges and LED lights designed by artist Ned Kahn, glows at night thanks to power from the building’s solar panels. Health Sciences Education Building, University of Arizona CO Architects (2012)

A Rick Joy-designed home in the desert of Arizona.

The silo was transported to Phoenix in a pickup truck. Grain silos have an oculus at the top that allows air to move through the grain; Kaiser converted that into a retractable skylight.

Kaiser added ten inches of spray foam insulation between the exterior shell and the interior of the house. He also fabricated all of the doors and windows in the structure.

Arizona. ModFire produces midcentury-inspired outdoor fireplaces at its studio in Phoenix. The steel designs can burn wood, propane, ethanol, or natural gas. The extra-large Urban Bonfire model is seven feet tall.

The John M. Roll United States Courthouse by Ehrlich Architects, 2013, design-build by Sundt. While residential work continues to play an important role as an ongoing laboratory for the development of design concepts, details, and material uses, the scaling of those ideas into larger urban and design concepts permeates virtually every effort the firm undertakes. The team will discuss this intersection in depth onstage at the show.

For the duo of young architects behind the firm Atherton Keener, the harsh, ever-changing light of Phoenix, Arizona, desert served as inspiration for their minimal and malleable home.

The Ramada House in Tucson, Arizona, is one of Chafee’s most recognized designs. In 1983, she became the first woman from Arizona to be named a fellow at the American Institute of Architects.

To mitigate Arizona’s intense sun, the home does not have any west-facing windows. Instead, the architects installed niches for windows facing north and south on the west elevation to let in natural light.

A design dream team connects a 1980s dwelling to its spectacular site in Paradise Valley, Arizona

Located in Phoenix, Arizona, the Norman Lykes Residence is one of 14 circular homes by the iconic architect.

When Matthew Trzebiatowski and his wife Lisa designed their own home in Arizona, they created a bathroom whose extreme aesthetic matched the area’s extreme climate. The Trzebiatowskis’ bathroom retains the spirit of Arizona heat with its shocking magenta ceilings, floors, and walls. The vanity is anything but—featuring art instead of a mounted mirror—and is made from sanded and sealed OSB, a waste material typically used in framing.

Outside, Arizona sandstone runs along the facade. Deep overhangs and simple details define the midcentury character, all of which have been restored.

Balogh, who died in 2006, was a celebrated local architect. He was also credited for designing an estimated 150 structures throughout Michigan, Illinois, and Arizona.

Burns was inspired by naturalistic elements in Frank Lloyd Wright's work. Natural Arizona sandstone runs along exterior and interior walls while in-ground planters dot the entryway.

Taliesin West was Wright’s winter home and “desert laboratory” in Scottsdale, Arizona from 1937 until his death in 1959. The complex is the headquarters of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation.

On the other side of the front door, stairs lead up to the remaining bedrooms. A large bay window—protected from the Arizona sun by the ramada—graces the foyer leading to the dining room.
