The house's green roof is more of a brown roof: a desert-like array of native and non-native succulents that require minimal irrigation. The soil area is maintained with motorcycle tires (including one from a Harley hog), which control erosion. Composting takes place here as well.

The roof deck is a place for entertaining, and offers scenic hillside views. During the design process, the team was challenged with preserving these views while adhering to the required 3.5-foot railing height mandated by building code, a height that would block all views while seated. As a solution, the team came up with open metal railings that would maintain safety while preserving the view.
On the lower roof, cedar decking and flower beds define one of several outdoor gardening spaces. Part of her ongoing research into the livability of cities, Fitzgerald aimed to create landscaped areas that were “aesthetic, aromatic, educational, and productive.” The deck is bordered by an expanded aluminum mesh railing and black metal corrugated panels.
Boasting sweeping downtown views, the roof deck reconciles complex geometry to accommodate a staircase, elevator, and usable social space. A fireplace is surrounded by outdoor seating from Paola Lenti.
Epic Sail

To reduce heat load and provide shade, DeSalvo initially tracked down a sail system from Sun Shade Australia. But the $6,000 price tag had the architect and contractor designing their own version out of Mermet solar screen fabric. It was fabricated by Covers Unlimited for $1,800.

Atop the 30-foot tower, a roof deck emerges through the trees, providing a unique vantage point of the structure below and the surrounding townscape.
The clerestories, located on the roof deck near the prefab addition, fill the loft with light.
From the grass roof patios, the house disappears almost completely, leaving only the landscape, water, and occasional passing orca.

The roof became the perfect location for their vegetable garden, as well as benches and a recreation space crowned by a hot tub powered by a four-kilowatt solar array.
The hydroponic rooftop garden grows out of volcanic stones. The home is conceived as a giant C-shaped spiral.

Up top, a verdant green roof of native grasses, wildflowers and fruits creates an oasis.
“We have all these different destinations,” says Sardinas, a writer who works from her home office. “I’ll be working, get stuck on a passage, and take a break to go read outside.” On the lower roof, red Vegetal chairs by Erwan and Ronan Bouroullec for Vitra provide moments for repose.
Vegetation from the garden on the lower roof provides a contrast to the backdrop of Gowanus’s rapidly changing landscape.
Twenty species of drought-resistant succulents, punctuated by solar panels, carpet the top of the home. Green Roof Outfitters installed the plants in modules.

Beyond the functional requirements, the architects’ concept for the roof form took on a dominant role in the building design: it folds up, around and down to shelter the house to the north and open up to views to the south. The standing seam metal roof allow for easy clipping of the solar panels.

The spacious rooftop deck features Tigerwood planks and an outdoor fireplace, which creates a cozy setting from which to enjoy spectacular sunsets. There's also a wine fridge on the spiral staircase leading to the deck—so you don't have to traipse back to the kitchen when you need annother bottle.
The glazed canopy extends to the garden to shield against the rain, ease the sunshine but does not degrade the light quality in the inner space.
