Three-quarters of a century after it was built, a beach home in Saltaire, New York, was elevated eight feet and enlarged by adding a new second story. Its cedar shingles were given a Cabot gray stain.

“The roof terrace accessed from the master bedroom is the sunniest place, naturally,” said Tremblay. A custom-made bed by Boom Town, Tremblay’s firm, is outfitted with linens by Kravet. Outdoor seating is by Jardin de Ville.
In reference to the unembellished geometry of the addition, Dyar explains, “[Thodos] framed the pavilion in a steel structure in a subtle nod to the preferred medium of the client’s sculptural work. He resolved challenges of detailing and scale with an eye to enhancing the floating quality of the space, as experienced both by its occupants and passersby.”
The 1,000-square-foot pavilion was completed in 2009 as a volunteer structure and tool shed--though today its used far more by the public than initially anticipated. In Sweden, architect Bengt Mattias Carlsson created a pavilion adjacent to a residence dating from the late 1800s. The pergola is made from glue-laminated timber beams set atop steel posts; it protects the pool from falling pine needles. George Nelson benches offer places to sit.

Oriented to absorb the afternoon sun, floor-to-ceiling doors comprise two-thirds of the home’s west-facing walls, which open to an elevated deck overlooking Island Bay. Combined with extra-thick building insulation, this passive element provides sufficient heating for the home, even during winter months—a true feat given the region’s cold seasonal winds.

The windows are by Jeld-Wen, and the metal roof is by Galvalume. “I feel lucky to contribute to the architectural diversity in the neighborhood with something truly of this moment that got built despite the odds,” says Marsha.
Makai’s structural steel components were designed by Mark Donofrio and affixed to the lava at four points. “Because of the angle of the lava, it’s asymmetrical,” says Moore.
