The house was designed with five yards, and each level has access to a separate deck or yard, so the owners can enjoy indoor/outdoor Californian living.

Sævik compares her house to a contemplative hideout. “It’s very quiet,” she says. “You can concentrate and let thoughts fly.” Her favorite summer pastimes include reading, painting, drawing, yoga, and “just sitting and feeling the forest,” she says.
The juxtaposition of old and new architectural forms is best viewed from the courtyard between the garage and playroom. Timber shingles and vertical boarding can be seen on the sun-shading and sub-floor skirt of the villa respectively—these subordinate materials of the historic architecture are given primary roles in the new design.
The patio and pool area are perfect for full integration of indoor/outdoor living.

The curvilinear lines and caned wicker seats of the Arlington collection reference British colonial style. Man-made wicker offers an authentic caned look with all the benefits of a modern material.
The slatted pine wood extensions add to the highly transparent nature of the house, while still providing privacy.

From there, a private walkway runs to the shore.
Having a strong outdoor element was also important.  A 32-foot-wide Solar Innovations sliding door connects the kitchen  to a deck and pool.
The windows are by Jeld-Wen, and the metal roof is by Galvalume. “I feel lucky to contribute to the architectural diversity in the neighborhood with something truly of this moment that got built despite the odds,” says Marsha.

cedar slat enclosure.
Large canopies shade the retreat’s southern elevations, rendering the interior and ipe wood patio comfortable in the Texas heat.
The house rests just below the crest of a gently sloping hilltop and commands powerful views. Its transparency and small size aim to minimize its impact on the land.
