According to the architects, "the spatial arrangement of the ‘pocket’ courtyards is also driven by environmental concerns: the building is teased apart to maximize winter solar penetration and to capture prevailing cooling breezes."
Much of Roscommon House is single-story. With a total of 5,900 square feet of floor area, its footprint takes up the majority of the lot, so the architects cleverly sowed in green spaces wherever they could.
The social spaces are located above, maximizing ocean views. A glass guardrail enables a seamless connection to the outdoors.
On-grade access allows the couple to transfer large pieces of art in and out, as well as open up the gallery to visitors while maintaining privacy to the residential spaces above.
The courtyard has a serene sitting area and frames views into the house and straight through to the other side.
The west patio opens up to a grass area that can be enjoyed by many.
All of the plants are native to the area. “I was trying to re-create what I have out my front door, where the park starts,” says Jon, who worked on the landscaping with Jones. “The garden is also super low-impact. I don’t water it at all, and  my kill rate is less than five percent.”
