"The design separates public and private space by a covered, but external walkway," note the team. "By juxtaposing these positions, the house acts like a camp—retreating to the tent to sleep and living under the tree canopy outside—a universal gathering space connected by landscape rather than built form."
The construction was done to make sure that the four areas of the roof — the sundeck, grass hill, play space, and outdoor terrace — all felt like distinct but united areas.
Since the open space is owned by everyone in the building, De Smedt wanted it to feel that way.

Delighted with the result, they requested additional structures, including a pool house with a dining area that opens to the outdoors. Rising from the edge of the pool deck, a planted overhang shelters a gym and sauna below.
From the interior of the courtyard the blue Uintah Mountains can be seen sprawling along the horizon.
Clean lines and mass groupings of plants help create a sense of openness and space within a small garden.
An extension of the internal circulation of the residence culminates in a dramatic view of Yankee Point Cove and the ocean from the cantilevered end of this boardwalk.
