A black-stained Western red cedar fence now runs along the perimeter of Sharen McLean and Mark Derraugh’s property in Vancouver, part of a complete revamping of the couple’s outdoor space. The project was spearheaded by Sharen’s daughter, Andrea McLean, whose daughters and nephew make the most of the urban oasis.

The house is supported by concrete walls at the edges of the house, and with steel beams running East to West. This creates a clear span in the house and across the deck.
The architects chose a swivel fireplace so the family can flexibly use it indoors or outdoors.
The open voids in the home give the property its beautiful, breezy character.
Protected from prying eyes by a planted slope, the back of the property soaks up the sun with a hammock hung from the ceiling.
The courtyard is open to the sky and mainly finished in concrete.
At the rear patio is a kitchen, dining area, and an Ipe-wood deck with a fire pit, lounge seats, and a water feature.
The floors and decking are all made from long-lasting, rot-resistant ipe wood.
The house sits on a steep site and was positioned below a sandstone crop so as to be concealed from the street. The approach to the house is via a suspended concrete staircase.
The Pacific Ocean is virtually in the property's backyard.

The client requested the design to include a water feature. Instead of a pool that would require tremendous upkeep, the architect was inspired by a pool he saw in Spain to produce a rain channel that is fed by rain and melting snow with a valve that the client can easily control.
