The Unit Coat Rack from Strand Design is designed to bring a sturdy storage solution for all of your interior spaces, from entryways and mudrooms to bedrooms and playrooms. With a thin profile, the Unit Rack can even fit inside a closet or on the back of a door. The streamlined rack is made from locally sourced white oak wood and three powder-coated steel wire hooks that are molded to accommodate a variety of items, including jackets, scarves, purses, or backpacks.

Misewel introduced these powder-coated Captain Hooks ($26 each) in 2009. An innovative stamping process creates little waste by producing nearly 300 coat hooks from a single 4'x8' sheet of steel.

Houston-based designer Barbara Hill is known for a stripped-down aesthetic that blends art-world cachet with Texas modernism. Vitra’s Slow chair sits in front of a powder-coated-steel bookcase made by Hill’s go-to fabricator, George Sacaris; it was originally built for the Houston house.

From design legends Charles and Ray Eames, the Hang-It-All coat rack transformed an everyday object into a design classic. Playful multicolored hooks create a visual staccato of color that lends vibrancy to a room, while the solid white or black versions add more of a mod feel. This is a functional design gift that Eames fans will love.

A peek into two rental units reveals simple but strong interiors. The architects clad the walls with polyurethane-coated plywood “to provide a durable and attractive finish and provide visual separation between the two levels in the high volume,” says Shelton.

There’s now a wood-paneled entry alcove inside the new front door, with a built-in bench, storage, and coat hooks.

Designed with apartment-living and small spaces in mind, the Norm Coat Hanger is a sleek, powder-coated steel coat stand with a small footprint. The top platform can be used to hold a hat, keys, and sunglasses, while the lower platform can prop up a pair of shoes or a bag. Near the top of the stand, there is a hook for hanging jackets, which also extends back to the wall, giving an extra place for draping a scarf or hanging a coat from a hanger.

Los Angeles-based duo Scout Regalia dreamed up this wall hook made of heavy gauge powder-coated steel for durable everyday use.

Husband-and-wife founders of Calico Wallpaper Rachel and Nick Cope show how easy it can be to put a personal, design-led touch on loft living—even when it’s a rental. When the Copes rented a Red Hook loft in an industrial 1860s warehouse, the couple turned their rental into a testing ground for their marbleized wallpaper business and installed wallpaper in each of their rooms. The custom pieces take inspiration from the loft’s immediate surroundings and characteristics—from the silver-and-gold marbled mural that complements the loft’s exposed structural beams to a color-gradient wallpaper in the primary bedroom that takes cues from the sunset seen from Red Hook.

The Plus House—named for the perpendicular trajectories of light and air that pass through on the top and bottom floors—is one in a series of architect-designed homes commissioned by Arkitekthus, a development company founded five years ago with a pledge to improve the quality of prefab architecture. The spruce panels that coat the second-floor exterior will fade in tandem with the zinc-coated steel that rims the glazed windows and doors. "They will go gray like we do," says architect Claesson Koivisto Rune.

A built-in closet and chalkboard surface in the entry keeps things tidy and the couple's to-do list in order.

Federal Hook by Isabella Furniture $225 Paul Isabella a Savannah College of Art and Design graduate, makes handcrafted, contemporary furniture from his Minne-apolis woodshop.

The Aluminum Rail with Hooks Set is the solution to overcrowded bathrooms and interiors. The rail includes four or five slide-on hooks to hold any item, from loofahs and washcloths in the shower, to make-up bags, towels, and more. It can also be used outside of the bathroom in an entryway, bedroom closet, or on the back of the door.

Christina Liljenberg Halstrøm's Georg Coat Rack 115, for Skagerak, hugs the wall and supports dozens of coat hangers (angled away from the wall). Clothing is one of the most voluminous challenges though this system doesn't sacrifice easy sorting and selecting of mulitple clothing articles for square footage.

The captivating silhouette of the four intersecting powder-coated steel rods of the Hash coatrack shows that minimalism can have a maximal effect upon a room's aesthetic.

Carrie Candle Lantern, $110 at the Dwell Store From Danish design studio Norm Architects, the timeless Carrie Candle Lantern is made of powder-coated steel and glass and includes a handle for portability.

Paola Navone's Black 94 coat rack is black bamboo, stone and orange cotton pompoms. Designed for Gervasoni, the Black 94 is understated and naturally inspired, resembling freshwater reeds.

From Plywood Office, the Rack of Coats takes a necessary household accessory—a coat rack—and reimagines it as sculpture. The Rack of Coats is defined by its graceful curves, which are created from steam-bent solid wood that is sourced domestically from a small Wisconsin mill. Beneath the curved wood coat hooks, the Rack of Coats includes a convenient table, providing storage space for keys, coins, mobile phones, or even a purse or work bag.

The Wire Basket and Wire Bowl (not pictured) are comprised of steel wire that is powder coated, chrome plated, or brass-plated. They can be used as a distinctive storage vessel.

Juhana Myllykoski’s Hidden collection for Sculptures Jeux includes a series of of shelves and hooks that provide a playful and unobtrusive solution to storing coats and bags.
