The Venezuelan mastermind behind the world’s largest furniture fair is an outspoken friend to the undiscovered.

PAR, 6030 Wilshire PAR proposes a new model of high-rise courtyard housing on the LACMA Tower site, integrated with mass transit, in the central cultural district of Los Angeles. The high rise tower is an important element within the contemporary metropolis. However, towers have come to be predominantly defined by their height and, as a type, have become anonymous. Typical residential towers, while successful in providing density, rarely provide living environments with individuality or access to nature, two qualities that are the essence of Los Angeles living. Our proposal acts against this endemic anonymity and repetitiveness of the recent past and puts forth a new model for the contemporary tower. Its aim is to achieve, despite its size, an individual and personal character comprised of a stack of individual houses in which each house is unique and identifiable with a direct connection to nature.

As in the living room and kitchen, the cottage’s sole bedroom features linens from IKEA.

Set on the far end of the original home’s backyard, the new cottage’s exterior is made of SIPs, or structurally insulated panels, from Premier SIPs.

The site is located within the Australian bushland of Willoughby Council's Griffin Heritage Conservation Area, which added another level of complexity to the approvals process and design.

Phase Design’s Griffin planter is as substantial as it is stunning. Made from hand-sanded fiberglass with an automotive polyurethane gloss finish the Griffin measures in at 18-inches high and 16 inches in diameter and the Griffin XL at 28-inches high and 20 inches in diameter. Good for the indoors though better suited for the backyard, the planter can also be complemented with the Griffin Stool/Table, which features the same shape but topped with a 1.5-inch solid walnut butcher board lid.

“We have lived on the property for many years and decided this could improve the overall site plan and would provide a flexible space for renting,” Haesloop said. His home’s back cottage takes up 432 square feet on a 50-foot by 140-foot lot.

“The garage was in bad shape and in the sunniest part of the yard,” Haesloop said. “That gave us the idea to build a new structure that would improve the overall site plan and give us a bigger garden with a southern exposure along the side.” Bonelli Windows and Doors supplied the panes that carry light into the cottage; the cladding is HardiePanels.

Bruce Livingstone’s seaside getaway in British Columbia features a remarkably open layout. The master bedroom flows into the living room, where Griffin lounge chairs by Lawson-Fenning face a fireplace clad in glass fiber–reinforced concrete panels by Wiersma Masonry.

Reclaimed white oak from Arborica was also used to create the dining table, which stands courtesy of Modern Legs. Bellini Chairs by Mario Bellini for Heller, purchased at Design Within Reach, surround the table. IKEA cabinets complete the kitchen.

“We were looking to get a much larger sense of space by keeping the volume generous and pulling the landscape views in,” Haesloop said, “even though the cottage is located in a fairly dense corner of Berkeley.” Red POÄNG chairs from IKEA sit on reclaimed white oak from Arborica, which runs throughout the home.

The structure of the coop was inspired by the new bus shelters and newsstands in New York City.

The owners shared Turnbull Griffin Haesloop’s dedication to green design, and agreed to modifications—like solar panels and passive heating and cooling elements—to earn the property LEED Platinum certification. The living room’s oversized fan is by Big Ass Fans. Ultra-Tec created the cable system on the stairs and guardrail.

The Wilshire Boulevard Temple, located near downtown Los Angeles on the Wilshire Boulevard, was completed in 1929. It has long been an LA landmark, its Byzantine-style dome visible from the highway.
