To one side of the entrance door is a large, light blue, chaise lounge-style sofa bed.
The home's character has maintained intact by preserving beautiful period details such as the wood-burning fireplace and the vaulted ceilings.
Perched on a hillside in San Rafael in Marin County just north of San Francisco, the Harrison House was designed by Beverley David Thorne in 1963. The midcentury home includes three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and stunning views of the San Rafael Valley. It also boasts modern updates, contemporary furnishings, and a vast collection of artwork.
The remodeled kitchen offers views of the San Rafael countryside and its surrounding valley. The right wing of the house is called the "Executive's Quarters" and includes three bedrooms and an office space, all of which have sliding glass doors that lead to a 800-square-foot deck. Just a 25 drive from the Golden Gate Bridge, the home is walking distance to McNears Beach Park and the Peacock Gap Golf Club.
The original fireplace was resurfaced using Colorado Buff Ledge stone, which offsets the black-and-white shades of the custom bench and Stilnovo sconce.
Along with designing the reception area, Marc Morro created the wood furniture in the bedrooms. Morro is one of the founders of AOO—a small company in Barcelona that designs and produces original furniture pieces that are made locally by themselves, artisans, or small manufacturers. Shown here is the lounge area of Libertine, the hotel’s bar that doubles as a restaurant.
Fashion designer Josie and her husband Ken Natori are big fans of traditional Japanese architecture, so when Brooklyn-based practice Tsao & McKown Architects designed their home in Pound Ridge, New York, they used a heavy, exposed-timber structure, and included Japanese-style gardens and landscaping.
Snowdon calls the design of the entire house a collaborative process with the clients, who actually recycled a good deal of furniture from their previous beach house, such as the coffee table and arm chairs seen here
Immediately to the right of the entry is the main living space, which features a Jetmaster 700D wood-burning fireplace.
