In the living room, the wood and concrete shell is accented with a steel stair railing and a window wall with a Mondrian pattern in the glazing.
Located in Portola Valley, California, this renovation of a William Wurster Ranch house began with a study of the home’s history. Inspired by original photos of the 1950s home, the renovation refreshed its significant architectural past without detracting from its Wurster essence.
Simple wood and brick contrast the industrial character of the concrete and steel, while also serving as sound dampeners.
Living room: with oak herringbone floor, custom made 5 meter long tv-bench made of birch plywood. Treated with natural soap and osmo wax. Dining table also made of same materials with doubled 18 mm plywood glued together and added brass details. By creating an open space plan, the living room looks more spacious with the natural light added. LED lighting on the transition of wall/ceiling and on the tv bench.
Our interior designer wanted to enhance the existing furniture and overall sophisticated aesthetic. To fuse the old elements with the new, we sourced pillows in vibrant colors pulled from the client’s daring, non-representational art. This also gave the space an element of approachable luxury, as opposed to the bare, formal look that it initially conveyed.
The living room is a cozy spot nestled between the expansive picture window and open doors that lead to the courtyard.

All furnishings were purchased on a budget. The rug and Friheten sleeper sectional in the living room, the Luftig oven hood, Norrsjön sink, Sektion cabinetry, and countertop in the kitchen, and the small dining counter with Glenn bar stools were all sourced from IKEA.

FCstudio updated the 5,000-square-foot apartment by removing several walls in central areas to clarify views and simplify the overall floor plan. The firm also custom-designed the Brazilian walnut room divider with a striking geometric pattern that allows light to traverse throughout the living area.

Interior designer Merrill Lyons plays with her son in the Brooklyn home she renovated with her husband, Charles Brill, a lighting designer and cofounder of New York–based company Rich Brilliant Willing (RBW). The couple’s design sensibility is marked by a warm mix of historic periods and styles, punctuated with pieces by RBW, including the circular brass Cinema chandelier that hangs in the living room. The leather sofa and teak  credenza are vintage; the 1960s rosewood Genius armchair by Danish designer Illum Wikkelso was reupholstered with fabric sourced from an outlet.
