Before the $17,000,000 restoration, the property had been severely deteriorated with crumbling walls and foundations, and had been named under the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s 2005 list for America’s 11 Most Endangered Places.
Leaving behind the Lounge, one re-enters the Living lined with white walls. Beyond the Black Wall is the Dining.

Steel “waterfall” style shaped staircase, visually unattached, allows unobstructed view of the entire living space.
Sliding glass doors integrate internal and exterior spaces, allowing a full use of the terrain.

Loft Living Room and Bedroom
The hammered copper side table was a gift from Francine's business partner, Carl D'Aquino. The pottery on the midcentury coffee table is by Alex Bauer.
The only feature that remains of the original home is the end gable wall. For the renovation, the stone on this wall has been left exposed. This feature, along with the wood-burning stove at the chimney area, are now the focal points of the living space.
Iron louvers have been used along the western facade to create a narrow corridor between the screen and exterior walls of the main volume.
In the library, black plywood joinery offers a pause from the entryway before the floorplan pivots to reveal a sunken concrete living area in the original front room.
High ceilings and a full-length brick fireplace are complemented by extensive glazing.

Double height living area opens onto the home's interconnecting courtyard and floods the living space with natural light.
The living spaces on the ground floor now consist of exposed steelwork with polished concrete, timber surfaces, and large Crittall windows.

An off-center skylight brings natural light into the living room, where the existing fireplace (inset) was refinished in metallic paint. A fiberglass Koishi pouf by Naoto Fukasawa for Linea sits by an Eames sofa. The painting is by Vanessa Prager.

Expansive windows have been installed to flood the house with sunlight and capture sweeping views of the park outside.
The team demolished the existing internal walls to open up the interiors and create a single, large living and dining area.
With fresh white walls, larch parquet flooring, and a sleek black fireplace, the apartment now radiates an open, airy environment. A beautiful pink staircase appears to float in the middle of the common area, demarcating the boundary between the living and dining spaces.
The materials that have been used for the façade, together with the enfilade of spaces of the new volume, echo the local architecture of the elongated farmhouses in the area.
The shallow plan helps with cross ventilation, while a deep overhang to the north provides shade for the living areas in the summer.
Thanks to cleverly designed built-in storage systems, clutter is neatly concealed throughout.

The sofa had to be large and deep enough that the couple and their dog could lay back, watch TV and enjoy the space. So, we had a sectional custom made and upholstered in a heavy duty Kravet fabric.
Glazing on both sides gives the television room an airy, pavilion-like feel.
The open-plan living room and dining area feature a cementitious floor covering, ERCO recessed LEDs, and EDL cabinetry laminates.
A minimalist staircase links the living room to the upper level.
A highly efficient ductless mini-split system provides heating and cooling.

An original brick wall with an arch opening frames views of The Press Room, a cozy lounge lined with paneled walls painted a deep cranberry hue to match the Press Room bar front.
