To make the space feel brighter, all of the walls—even bricks—are painted white, which contrasts with the raw brick ceiling and original brown tile floors. The Recast Plus sofa bed, with a pink hue that echoes the brick ceiling, is from Innovation Living. The blown-glass Gordiola pendants are a design the resident saw in a Mallorca hotel that Bloomint designed.

A love of midcentury design marks the couple’s choice of living room furnishings, which include an Eames lounge chair and a Noguchi coffee table, paired with a sofa from HD Buttercup. The arching neck of the Prouvé Potence sconce mirrors the home’s exterior form, while the large Fleetwood sliding door extends the space to the outdoors.

Sitting Pretty

The ground floor was originally two rooms; now it’s been transformed into one continuous space. To compensate for a low ceiling, Kiely’s team dug into the ground to create a true sunken seating section leading to the garden. Built-in sofas, an Eames rocker, a stool by G Plan, and concrete tiles outfit the space. Kiely chose a neutral charcoal finish for the Malm fireplace to balance the green linoleum floor and her own Rhododendron wallpaper in Sunflower.

The West Village renovation was the second project Lubrano completed for her client. "She is a collector of contemporary art and has minimalist design sensibilities, so she was not necessarily interested in reiterating typical attitudes of how a historic townhouse should present itself," Lubrano says. "This residence creates a mood that is queued not through a rote familiarity, but through a pleasure in precision and a confidence in form making."

One of the main challenges was integrating the interiors with the outdoor areas—a luxury in dense Manhattan. On the parlor floor, a floor-to-ceiling window overlooks the patio.
