To adhere to a limited budget, Höweler + Yoon used basic materials throughout—slate, concrete, wood, cement board—but splurged on a marble countertop in the kitchen. "Because the house and millwork was so neutral to room could take a bit more richness," says Yoon. From within the combined living/kitchen/dining area, one only sees the microcourtyard outside.
A large dark wood stained island provides extra storage and work space for both the parents and the children.
Kitchen raised on a one-step plinth with gas cooktop on island with views of Los Angeles beyond.  Bianco Cervaoile marble was selected for the island, countertops and backsplash for its striking veining and complimentary fit with the exposed concrete walls.
