In the kitchen, an exposed brick wall stands out against the milky smoothness of the marble tile floors. “I wanted the house to be raw and interesting,” Kolasiński explains. The large cupboard was designed by his company. Appliances are by Smeg and the stove hood is by Elica.
The original load bearing wall was replaced with a wood beam and vertical supports, creating a more open floor plan.
The exterior wall of the kitchen reveals the original brickwork.  Gray, full-height, seamless cabinets match the hue of the gray painted brick. Two light blue counter stools add a pop of color.
In the kitchen, Goneau illuminated the brick back wall with an LED strip recessed in the counter and contrasted it with glossy black cabinets and Jenn-Air appliances. When guests come over for dinner, they can sit on stools by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec and chat with the cook over a light gray custom island that matches the floor. The fixtures are by Blanco.
A pass-through window in the kitchen connects to the porch for ease of socializing.
The kitchen stools are from Tuscan Outdoor Tables, a Dandenong, Victoria outfit that crafts furniture from local Cypress and reclaimed timber.
The home boasts high indoor air quality thanks to zero emission joinery, low-VOC paint, stains, and carpets, and construction that utilizes cross-ventilation.
Among the couple’s cost-saving measures was outfitting the kitchen with their own custom cabinetry. The brick and windows are original, the Garland stove was a Craigslist find, and the floor tile was found on closeout at a cost of about $1 per square foot.
