Located over the central hallway, the 33-foot-long spine cartridge serves as the home's central nervous system. It contains all the electrical and communication lines, as well as ductwork for HVAC.

Each line is in communication with every other line: ceiling lines align with glazing patterns, while in the dining room the windows open together, a reference to the idea of a “machine for living.”

A baby-blue pool ladder leads up to a loft area. “I’ll read a book up there, or take a nap,” says Ryan.

Located on a working farm, the hard-working home helps owners Michael and Anna RiCharde transition easily from inside to outside. "I'll be out in the fields handling sheep, then I can just walk inside, go right to the laundry room, drop my dirty clothes, and close it off,

Farnham squared off the ill-fitting addition and specified large-scale, sliding glass doors from Fleetwood that match the rest of the home and let the breakfast nook open to the exterior. A white Saarinen-style table is surrounded by wooden chairs with woven seats, which were intended to warm the scheme.

“We have all these different destinations,” says Sardinas, a writer who works from her home office. “I’ll be working, get stuck on a passage, and take a break to go read outside.” On the lower roof, red Vegetal chairs by Erwan and Ronan Bouroullec for Vitra provide moments for repose.

The first impression Meag got from the bus—which had its original black paint chipped away to reveal the dull, red primer underneath—was "don’t come too close, I’ll bite you," but Ben felt that it had great bones and plenty of potential.

The communication between interior and exterior is unmistakable. The polished steel that surrounds the fireplace and the concrete floor’s dark finish recall the home’s exterior, while the contrasting stark white walls create a visual language as striking as the building’s black facade.

“There’s an interesting form of communication that happens when we’re both working. The music that is coming from the second floor starts to inform the painting that is happening on the first floor, and visa versa. It’s like we’re collaborating in an indirect way.”

The core on the third floor is split down the middle to create a dressing room. On choosing the delft blue color Priscilla says, "Since we were painting the whole column up through the house I wanted a color that would make a statement but adapt to the different situations. Blue works, though I almost did green. Maybe I'll repaint it someday."

The rooftop terrace is covered by the greenhouse roof and features a long dining table surrounded by secondhand chairs from a community center and a pink kitchen used for preparing food when entertaining. The couple hope to add cooking facilities in the future. “It’s a great place for parties,” says Margit. “I haven’t grown anything up here yet, but I’ll start this spring.”

“Facebook Marketplace is pretty amazing for sourcing large furniture,” says Tiffany, who got her dining room table by trading it for a $20 houseplant. “I had seen it at really high-end vintage stores before for like $10,000 plus. It was in really rough shape and a guy was just trying to get rid of it. He was like, I'll trade you for a plant.”

Because of the project’s rural nature, there was no cell service on-site. Communication with the local tradespeople had to be crystal clear from the outset, so there were just a handful of details used on the whole project, inside and out. “It was about keeping the vocabulary simple, so we were all on the same page,” says Cuppett.

The exterior. You can see our wood stove flue and solar panels on the roof. When we bought our bus it was faded black, chipping and forgotten; I'll admit even a bit scary looking. We spent weeks prepping the body and painted the bus ourselves. It was one of the most challenging, yet rewarding steps of building this tiny home.

If this ends up being the sexiest chaise lounge I see all week, I’ll be perfectly satisfied. I see why it was originally designed for a ski resort in France 1963; it’s exactly where I’d want to hang out after a long day of hitting the slopes. I’d imagine it pairs nicely with a glass of brandy.
