LED ambient downlights allow the home to glow at night.
Avoiding deep foundation piers, the home is set on a reinforced concrete slab that tapers upward around a cantilevered perimeter.
The Goto House is sheathed in heavy-gauge steel cladding to protect against the elements and temperature fluctuations.
The roofs are made of corrugated aluminum, and the timber sidings used at the entrance are repeated on key ceiling planes.
"This distinctive sheltering shape is again expressed in the wrapped floor-wall-roof profile of the three wings, which—assembled together, one above the other—track the site as it slopes toward the water," says Philip Olmesdahl.
The owner wanted a cozy family escape with plenty of outdoor entertaining areas.
The original brownstone exterior was given a bright refresh with Farrow & Ball Skimming Stone paint on the facade and Benjamin Moore Black for the trim, door, balusters, and handrails. The architectural designers also added new windows and doors.
The surrounding grounds were relandscaped to create even more privacy and garden views from the house and around the tennis court and pools.
Essentially, the entrance was kept in the same spot, with the chimney to the far right side.
“Screening along the east provides some visual protection from the neighbouring properties whilst not compromising any of the views or natural light, which fills the living space and kitchen from morning until late afternoon,” adds Chris.
Outdoor stairs lead to an accessible rooftop deck that offers 360-degree views. Kliplock metal sheeting clads the roof.
Bespoke Cor-Ten cladding wraps around the home to meet local bushfire regulations.
Capral 900 series aluminum-framed glazed sliding doors wrap around the living area to establish an indoor/outdoor connection.
The Mount Macedon House is the first-ever building constructed on this site.
The secluded and tranquil setting is a complete departure from the clients' former home in an inner Melbourne suburb.
"It was important to the owner as well that the site not be over-excavated, but rather emerge gently out of the existing landscape," explains Chris. "The elevated and light form essentially grew out of this."
Nestled into the side of Mount Macedon, the home is on a remote site surrounded by nature, yet still within a commutable drive to Melbourne.

The modules were installed in just one day.
"To accommodate for the sloping site, the extension is terraced down the block with a slight change in levels between the original house, the entrance way, and the new modular living area," adds the firm.
The lower level of the Ivanhoe extension is wrapped in black-stained timber, while the upper portion features blackbutt vertical cladding.
All three flat-roofed buildings are clad in weathering steel expanded metal rainscreens, while floor-to-ceiling operable glass walls bring the outdoors in.
The home presents a narrow facade to the street.
"One first encounters the refined folded steel gutter, and transitions along the entry deck as the project unfolds toward the rear," said the architects. "Offset against the heavy blade walls, the roof canopy is simple and refined as it tapers to a point and allows the folded steel gutter to cut a sharp silhouette against the undulating roof forms of the adjoining buildings."
Ogosta used staggered board-form concrete site walls to raise the house above the street level.
